In response, Douyin sued Baidu for copyright infringement in China-based Hangzhou Internet Court which tackles Internet-based cases.

Bytedance surprised Baidu by proving their case with data stored on an immutable ledger known as blockchain that could prove the copying. This was the first-ever accepted blockchain evidence by a court.

Baidu was found guilty of copyright infringement and paid monetary damages to ByteDance.
