Two Dead, 35 Hurt As Gunfire Erupts At Georgia Homecoming Block Party With 1,000 People — GBI Hunts Shooter As Tiny Vienna Reels

VIENNA, Ga. — Two men are dead and dozens more were injured after gunfire tore through a homecoming-weekend block party in the small south Georgia town of Vienna, leaving a tight-knit community in shock and state investigators searching for answers.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said shots rang out around 1:25 a.m. Sunday, October 4, in Dooly County, where more than a thousand people were reported to have gathered for the celebration. Authorities said at least 50 rounds were fired and that gunfire erupted from the 900 block of Pine Street, roughly a block from where two victims were later found dead in the 600 block of the same street.

Victims Identified

The GBI identified the two people killed as Ja'Quavion Aderious Jackson, 21, of Cordele, and Macaleb Malik Jackson, 23, of Hawkinsville. Officials have not said whether the two men were related or knew each other.

Thirty-five people in total were reported injured, according to local reporting. The Crisp County Sheriff's Office said 25 of them suffered gunshot wounds, while about 10 others were hurt in other ways — likely in the panic as hundreds of partygoers ran for cover.

Hospital Overwhelmed By Wave Of Patients

Crisp Regional Hospital, a Level III trauma center roughly nine miles away, treated 26 patients. Two patients were transferred to other facilities, and two required emergency surgery, according to WALB-TV. Smaller rural hospitals rarely face that kind of sudden surge, and local first responders from multiple agencies worked through the night.

No Suspect Publicly Identified

As of Sunday, authorities had not released any suspect information or a motive. The GBI is leading the investigation, assisting the Dooly County Sheriff's Office, and has asked anyone with photos, video, or information from the party to come forward. Tips can be submitted to the GBI at 478-987-4545 or 1-800-597-TIPS (8477).

A community group, the Youth Peace & Justice Foundation, has offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

With so many people present and so many phones recording, investigators are expected to rely heavily on crowd-sourced video — a growing tool in mass-casualty investigations across the country.

A Community Gathers To Pray

By Sunday morning, roughly 100 people gathered at the Dooly County courthouse in Vienna for an impromptu prayer vigil. Elected officials, including Rep. Sanford Bishop, Sen. Raphael Warnock and several candidates for governor, issued statements offering condolences to the families and thanking first responders for their rapid response.

Homecoming weekends are meant to be celebrations of family, football and tradition. Instead, Vienna now joins a long and painful list of American communities whose gatherings were turned into crime scenes.

The Bigger Picture For Americans

The shooting is a reminder of how vulnerable large, informal gatherings are — block parties, tailgates and after-game celebrations that often have no formal security, controlled entry or emergency access plan. Small-town law enforcement agencies, which may have only a handful of deputies on duty overnight, can be quickly outmatched.

Safety experts generally advise attendees at crowded events to note exits on arrival, avoid bottlenecks, and run, hide or take cover immediately if gunfire erupts. Organizers of community events are encouraged to coordinate with local police in advance, even when the gathering is informal.

What Happens Next

The GBI's work will focus on collecting shell casings, ballistic evidence and witness accounts from the two crime scenes, and on determining whether more than one shooter was involved. The fact that gunfire was reported at two locations a block apart may complicate the timeline.

For now, families in Vienna and neighboring Cordele and Hawkinsville are planning funerals and tending to wounded loved ones. Anyone with information is urged to contact the GBI.

This is a developing story and will be updated as authorities release more details. Details are based on GBI statements and local reporting and may change as the investigation continues.
