US Taiwan Trade Deal Slashes Barriers, Unlocks $85B in Purchases

US Taiwan Trade Deal

The newly signed US Taiwan Trade Deal is poised to redraw trade routes across the Pacific, dismantling nearly all Taiwanese tariffs on American imports while setting a 15% tariff on goods flowing the other direction.

Under the reciprocal agreement announced Thursday, Taiwan will eliminate or reduce 99% of its tariff barriers on U.S. products, according to the Office of the United States Trade Representative. The deal pairs that sweeping market access with a pledge from Taiwan to purchase nearly $85 billion in American goods over the next four years.

It is a high-stakes exchange: open the gates wider for U.S. exports, and in return accept a lower — but still significant — U.S. tariff wall.

Breaking Down Tariffs — and Red Tape

Beyond tariffs, Taiwan agreed to dismantle long-standing non-tariff barriers that have complicated U.S. access to its market. That includes lifting quantitative restrictions on American vehicles and beginning to accept U.S. Food and Drug Administration marketing authorizations for medical devices and pharmaceuticals.

The shift effectively streamlines regulatory approvals, clearing a path for U.S. health care and automotive exports that had faced procedural headwinds.

At the same time, U.S. tariffs on Taiwanese goods will remain at 15% or the U.S. Most Favored Nation rate — whichever is higher. That marks a reduction from the 20% tariffs initially imposed by the Trump administration. U.S. officials also identified certain Taiwanese goods that will not face tariffs at all.

Energy, Aircraft and Power: $85 Billion in Commitments

The agreement is anchored by major purchase commitments from Taiwan.

Over four years, Taiwan plans to buy:

  • $44.4 billion in liquefied natural gas and crude oil

  • $15.2 billion in civil aircraft and engines

  • $25.2 billion in power equipment, power grids, materials, generators, storage facilities, marine equipment, steel-making equipment and other machinery

Taken together, the commitments approach $85 billion — spanning energy, aviation and infrastructure, sectors central to U.S. industrial output.

Ambassador Jamieson Greer said the agreement “will eliminate tariff and non-tariff barriers facing U.S. exports to Taiwan,” expanding opportunities for American farmers, ranchers, fishermen, workers, small businesses and manufacturers.

He added that the deal strengthens a long-standing economic partnership and will bolster supply chain resilience, particularly in high-technology industries — a sector increasingly viewed as strategic terrain in global trade competition.

Parallel Moves: North Macedonia and Bangladesh

The Taiwan announcement came alongside a new framework unveiled Thursday between the U.S. and North Macedonia. Under that reciprocal trade outline, North Macedonian goods will face a 15% tariff.

The countries agreed to address U.S. concerns about non-tariff barriers affecting priority trade areas, according to a White House statement. North Macedonia also committed to maintaining environmental protections, tackling labor issues and purchasing liquefied natural gas.

Greer described that framework as laying the groundwork for a broader reciprocal agreement aimed at deepening economic ties while reducing regulatory obstacles for American producers.

The developments follow closely on the heels of a separate deal with Bangladesh, reached just days earlier. Under that arrangement, certain Bangladeshi imports will be exempt from a 19% tariff that applies to most merchandise from the country.

A Calculated Trade Reset

Taken together, the moves reflect a recalibration of U.S. trade relationships — lowering some barriers, maintaining others, and using purchase commitments as leverage.

The US Taiwan Trade Deal, in particular, stands out for its scale and scope. By slashing nearly all Taiwanese tariffs on U.S. goods while keeping a structured tariff regime in place for Taiwanese exports, the agreement attempts to balance market access with domestic protections.

Whether it delivers the promised surge in exports and stronger supply chains will unfold over the coming years. For now, the deal signals a new chapter in a trade relationship that has grown increasingly strategic — and increasingly consequential.
