Yoga Teacher Killer

In a tale of jealousy, betrayal, and a desperate bid for freedom, the murder of professional cyclist Anna Moriah "Mo" Wilson by yoga instructor Kaitlin Armstrong has gripped the nation. This shocking story, now immortalized in the 2024 Lifetime movie “Yoga Teacher Killer: The Kaitlin Armstrong Story,” reveals the deadly love triangle.

Armstrong, born on November 21, 1987, in the Midwest, transitioned from a finance career to a yoga instructor after receiving certification in Indonesia. However, her life took a sinister turn in 2022.

Armstrong's life spiraled out of control when she discovered that Wilson had briefly dated her boyfriend, fellow pro cyclist Colin Strickland.

Armstrong and Strickland had an on-again-off-again relationship. By all accounts Strickland only had a romantic relationship with Wilson for a week, or so, before they agreed to just be friends.

Despite Strickland's insistence that his relationship with Wilson was short-lived and they remained just friends, Armstrong's jealousy knew no bounds.

A friend testified in court, revealing Armstrong's ominous statement, "If Colin ever started dating anyone else seriously, what would she do? And she said, 'I would kill her.'"

A Love Triangle Turns Deadly

The events leading up to the murder began in January 2022 when Strickland purchased two firearms, one for himself and one for Armstrong.

In May 2022, Wilson arrived in Austin, Texas, to stay with a friend for an upcoming bike race.

Strickland and Wilson met for a swim and drinks, unaware that Armstrong was tracking Wilson through the Strava fitness app.

When Wilson returned to her friend's home at 8:36 p.m., security cameras captured Armstrong's black Jeep nearby. By 9:45 p.m., Wilson was found dead, shot three times, in a pool of blood on the bathroom floor.

Armstrong on the Run

The investigation quickly pointed to Armstrong. Police traced the black Jeep to her and Strickland and found a gun in Armstrong's name that matched the shell casings at the crime scene.

On May 12, 2022, Armstrong was arrested on a misdemeanor theft warrant but released due to a clerical error. The following day, she sold her Jeep for $12,000 and fled Austin.

Armstrong traveled to Houston, then to New York, and finally to San Jose, Costa Rica, using her sister's passport without permission.

In Costa Rica, Armstrong underwent extensive plastic surgery to alter her appearance, spending $6,000 on lip fillers, rhinoplasty, and a brow lift.

She also changed her hair from long red curls to short, dark brown locks. Living under the alias Allison Page, she evaded authorities until her arrest on June 29, 2022.

Armstrong was extradited to the United States and charged with first-degree murder and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Her bail was set at $3.5 million.

A Second Escape Attempt

While awaiting trial in Travis County Jail, Armstrong meticulously planned another escape.

On October 11, 2023, during a medical appointment outside the jail, she fled on foot with her hands still in cuffs. She attempted to scale a fence but was quickly apprehended after a 10-minute pursuit.

An affidavit revealed Armstrong had trained for the escape in her cell, faking a leg injury to avoid leg restraints. During the chase, she removed her prison-issue pants to reveal thermal pants underneath and managed to free one hand from her cuffs.

The Murder Case Unfolds

Prosecutors presented compelling evidence at Armstrong's trial, including her tracking of Wilson's social media and using the Strava app's GPS to locate her.

Armstrong had also accessed Strickland's email and Instagram accounts, monitoring his interactions with Wilson. Despite her defense team's arguments that the evidence was circumstantial, Armstrong's DNA was found on Wilson's bike at the crime scene. Receipts for her plastic surgery in Costa Rica were also discovered.

On November 16, 2023, after less than two hours of deliberation, the jury found Armstrong guilty of first-degree murder.

She was sentenced to 90 years in prison, which she is now serving in a women's prison in Central Texas. The case of the Yoga Teacher killer was marked by its dramatic twists and two desperate bids for freedom.

It remains a sad reminder of how jealousy and obsession can lead to tragic consequences.
