15-Year-Old Fatally Shot at Queens Playground; Brooklyn Teen Faces Murder Charge

New York City police have arrested an 18-year-old Brooklyn man in connection with the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy during a violent confrontation at a Southeast Queens park earlier this month, authorities said.

The suspect, Zahir Davis of Springfield Gardens, faces a murder charge in the death of Jaden Pierre, 15, of South Richmond Hill. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement that Pierre was “mercilessly beaten” before being shot during an April 16 gathering at Roy Wilkins Park in St. Albans.

Katz described the violence as a sudden eruption inside what was supposed to be a social event, saying no family should endure the loss of a child in such circumstances.

Park meetup spirals into group assault and gunfire

According to prosecutors, Pierre had come to the park for a water fight that had been promoted on social media, drawing a large group of teenagers. What unfolded instead, authorities say, was a coordinated attack.

A group of boys allegedly swarmed Pierre, striking him repeatedly with punches and kicks as the scene quickly deteriorated into chaos. During the assault, Davis allegedly stepped forward and fired a silver handgun into Pierre’s chest, fatally wounding him.

The violence scattered the crowd, turning a public gathering into a crime scene in seconds.

Multiple charges and prior threats reported

In addition to murder, Davis has been charged with first-degree gang assault and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, according to the district attorney’s office.

Prosecutors also said Davis had been charged earlier this month in an unrelated case involving alleged threats to shoot his ex-girlfriend, who is the mother of his child. If convicted in the killing, he could face up to 25 years in prison.

Arrest after flight to Jamaica

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said on social media platform X that Davis fled to Jamaica following the shooting. Authorities tracked him through an international manhunt, and he was taken into custody by members of the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force when he returned to New York on Friday night.

The NYPD described the killing as a “horrific act of violence,” underscoring the brutality captured in video footage reviewed by investigators.

Video evidence fuels public outrage

Footage circulating online—and later posted by officials—appears to show a group of teens surrounding Pierre before the fatal shot is fired. The video shows Pierre being knocked to the ground, briefly regaining his footing, and then moments later, gunfire sends bystanders fleeing in panic.

Former Mayor Eric Adams also shared video of the attack, saying it reflects the devastating reality of youth violence in the city.

“When you see that video… you feel a sense of heartbreak,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during a WNYC discussion, noting the emotional toll on the city.

Teen violence concerns amid mixed crime data

Pierre’s death marks at least the seventh teenage shooting fatality in New York City this year, according to Gothamist reporting. While NYPD data shows record-low overall shootings and murders in the first quarter of the year, officials acknowledge that isolated acts of extreme violence continue to strike communities.

As Mamdani said at a public event, statistical improvements have done little to ease the shock of tragedies like this one, where a social gathering ended in irreversible loss.
