Exactly fifty years ago today, the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. occurred. However, although Dr. King has passed, his values remain very much alive. Hours ago, Fox News shared an interesting way for Americans to honor Dr. King's legacy.

Honoring Dr. King's Legacy and Values

At this point in time, America is extremely divided. Much of the aforementioned division can be attributed to politics. Many people in this country have furthermore cited the 2016 Presidential election as one of the most divisive and polarizing events in America. However, even after more than one year after the most recent Presidential election, Americans are still estranged.

Republican leaders and Democratic leaders remain alienated. Liberal and conservative voters also view each other unfavorably. Thus far, Congress' inability to work with those with opposing policies has engendered two government shutdowns. For all of the foregoing reasons and more, citing the United States as divided is an understatement. Nevertheless, Fox News affirms that one of the best ways to heal the country and honor Dr. King's legacy entails "engaging people who are different."

"We can disagree without being disagreeable. We can challenge each other's view and perspectives without tearing down the person who holds them," affirms the opinion writer.

Many of Martin Luther King Jr.'s most notable quotes also echo the preceding sentiments:

"Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend."

"I have decided to stick with love... Hate is too great a burden to bear."

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

Dr. King's Legacy and Values and the Future of America

Fox News goes on to cite social media exchanges and TV rhetoric as enablers of the division and vitriol in America. Furthermore, both sides are responsible for discord and acrimony in this country. The writer finally affirms that the 50 year anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s death serves as the perfect opportunity for reflection and change.

Listening to and working with people of myriad ideologies, politics, and viewpoints is arguably the only way America can progress.
