Yesterday afternoon, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that the House of Representatives will move forward with an impeachment inquiry into President Trump. This announcement comes after immense progressive pressure for Pelosi to move towards impeachment. During her remarks, the House Speaker cited Trump's call with the president of Ukraine as lawbreaking.

Since the announcement, various Americans have reacted. Republicans have noted that Pelosi cannot unilaterally decide to impeach Trump; others on the right-wing expressed doubt that Trump will truly face impeachment. Conversely, many individuals on the left-wing who dislike the president are cheering and stating that Pelosi took the proper action.

2020 Democrat Bernie Sanders has taken a more cautious approach. While supportive of impeachment, Sanders warned that it may backfire on Democrats since GOP Senate members are unlikely to support it.

Sanders on the Impeachment Inquiry and Republicans Leaders

On Tuesday, Sanders shared his thoughts on the impeachment inquiry, during his time in Iowa. Apparently, Sanders believes that Republicans in the House and Senate are fearful of President Trump and will therefore decline to vote for impeachment. Additionally, Sanders claimed that Trump will use the impeachment inquiry -- and the subsequent lack of impeachment support from Congressional Republicans -- to claim innocence.

The 2020 Democrat's precise words read as follows:

"I’ll tell you that my gut is that [President Trump intimidates] the average Republican in the Senate and the House. [...] I have my doubts that any Republican, or very few, would vote against him. You know [and I know] what [Trump] will do: ‘I am vindicated! I am vindicated!’ And I think that is a fact [to take] into consideration."

Sanders then proceeded to allege that the president's behavior in office is "unconstitutional" and moreover expressed support for "a process" to take place.

The Reality about Impeachment

Despite yesterday's impeachment inquiry announcement, there are still some realities which people need to know. First of all, in order to impeach this president, applicable votes must come from both the House and the Senate. The House has already voted on impeachment multiple times and failed. Even if impeachment made it to the Senate, two-thirds of the very red Senate would have to vote in favor.

In today's political climate, it's highly unlikely that two-thirds of the Senate will vote to impeach Trump. The president maintains an incredibly high rating amongst the Republican Party. Furthermore, since Pelosi's announcement of impeachment, Republicans have come out against the idea of impeachment, citing it as unwarranted.
