On Tuesday around 5 p.m. two emperor tamarin monkeys missing since Monday from the Dallas Zoo were found alive.  The monkeys had been removed from their habitat enclosure.

Authorities are still trying to identify a mysterious man who may know something about all the mysterious events at the zoo.

Dallas police said the monkeys’ habitat had been intentionally cut open and “it is believed the animals were intentionally taken from the enclosure.”

According to police, investigators received a tip that the animals were at an abandoned home in Lancaster, a city 15 miles south of the zoo.

“Dallas police, with Lancaster police, went to the home and the home was empty, and the monkeys were found in a closet,” Dallas police explained.

Zoo spokeswoman Kari Streiber said Dallas police contacted the zoo to secure and transport the emperor tamarin monkeys back to the zoo grounds.

“We are thrilled beyond belief to share that our two emperor tamarin monkeys have been found,” the zoo posted on Twitter Tuesday evening. “They will be evaluated by our veterinarians this evening.”

The zoo was closed Monday and Tuesday due to the ice storm that hit the Dallas area. And will remain closed on Wednesday due to the weather.

The monkeys were located around 5 p.m. on Tuesday. It is still uncertain when they were taken from their habitat.

The monkeys’ retrieval is the latest in a string of strange and suspicious incidents at the zoo. This was 4th time this month the zoo discovered possible tampering. And the “unusual” circumstances include a rare vulture’s death last week.

Earlier Tuesday before the monkeys were found Dallas police released zoo surveillance video and a photo of an unidentified man they want to speak to about the case.

Police are still requesting the public's help in identifying this person.

Ongoing criminal investigation

On January 13 a clouded leopard named Nova disappeared. The zoo closed while they searched for the missing feline. And she was discovered hours later close to her habitat.

A criminal investigation was opened after discovering the fence around Nova’s enclosure was “intentionally cut,” police said.

Later the same day zoo personnel found similar fence cuts had been made to the enclosure of the langur monkeys. And none of the monkeys had left their habitat. At the time police said it was “unknown if the two incidents are related.”

Less than two weeks later a vulture named Pin was found dead in his habitat. The bird’s death was “suspicious.” And there was “an unusual wound and injuries” to Pin.

The zoo is reportedly offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and indictment of a suspect in the vulture’s death.

Dallas police continue to investigate all four incidents. A police spokesperson claims that this is now a joint investigation with the US Fish and Wildlife.
