In a recent California shooting that has sent shockwaves throughout the community, a 3-year-old child accidentally fired an unsecured handgun, fatally injuring their 1-year-old sister.

The incident occurred in a Fallbrook residence on Monday morning, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The initial call to the authorities arrived around 7:30 a.m. local time, reporting a shooting incident.

Deputies, on arrival, found the 1-year-old victim suffering from a severe head wound.

In a disheartening announcement, the Sheriff's Department confirmed that first responders transported the toddler to Palomar Hospital, where she was pronounced dead approximately an hour later.

The San Diego County District Attorney's Office has been notified about the case and will be updated on the findings, according to the Sheriff's Department.
