GMU Law Reviewing Policies

In a reveal that has sent tremors through the legal community, George Mason University's law school is currently under the microscope.

An associate dean of the university confirmed to Law360 Pulse that following allegations against a former professor, the school is reconsidering its staff training and oversight strategies.

GMU Law Reviewing Policies : Resignation and Regret

Joshua Wright, once the chair of the Federal Trade Commission and a prominent professor at GMU’s Antonin Scalia Law School, has resigned amid claims of abusing his position for illicit contact.

Ken Turchi, the associate dean, didn't mince words while conveying the school's stance.

He emphasized their zero-tolerance approach towards inappropriate conduct, expressing regret over any policy violation.

The school, striving to be a beacon of appropriate behavior, shared a message with its students and staff, highlighting the importance of reporting such misconducts.

This letter, bearing the signature of dean Ken Randall, was tactful, not naming Wright directly, yet informing the recipients of the allegations against a Scalia Law professor.

It conveyed the difficulty of discussing employment matters but reaffirmed that the implicated faculty member was no longer associated with the school.

GMU Law Reviewing Policies : Cooperating with Investigations

George Mason University's law school has taken the mantle of transparency, providing all relevant facts to university investigators.

They’ve pledged to make their staff available for testimonies, ensuring justice isn’t impeded.

Turchi stated that the school had taken interim steps to safeguard its students, though the details remain under wraps due to employment confidentiality.

Damning Accusations Surface

As if the scenario wasn't murky enough, further fuel was added to the fire.

Elyse Dorsey, a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, and Angela Landry, counsel at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, both recounted tales of Wright crossing boundaries during their student years, ultimately leading to unwanted advances.

They felt trapped, fearing career repercussions if they rebuffed him.

But this Pandora’s box didn’t end there.

Christa Laser, a professor at Cleveland State University College of Law, unveiled an email she received from Wright in 2021.

This seemingly innocuous proposal for a date was, in fact, a manifestation of a larger pattern, shedding light on a grim reality.

The legal industry was buzzing with this revelation, leading to a flurry of media coverage.

Wright's defense has been vehement, with his attorney, Lindsay R. McKasson, deeming the accusations as falsehoods birthed from failed monetary demands.

GMU Law Reviewing Policies : A Ripple Effect

This incident has provoked responses from other significant entities.

The FTC Chair, Lina Khan, dispatched a memo, echoing GMU's commitment to creating a safe reporting environment.

The memo, emphasizing the importance of combating sexual harassment, was a powerful testament to ensuring a fear-free atmosphere.

Voices Rise in Unison

In an age where social media is a potent tool, it didn’t remain silent.

Christa Laser highlighted the influx of victims sharing similar experiences with Wright, painting a disturbing picture.

Many rallied behind the victims, expressing support and anger, pointing to a desperate need for a #metoo movement within the legal sphere.

As the storm rages on, the hope is that justice will prevail, and the institution will come out stronger and more vigilant against any forms of misconduct.
