dsrupts travel plans

Hurricane Hilary has left a trail of travel plans disrupted across the United States. The storm caused more than 6,000 flights to be canceled or delayed.

This unprecedented event has jolted the air travel industry, with major airports grappling with cancellations and delays. Las Vegas and Southern California were especially hard-hit.

Last week Hurricane Hilary unleashed its fury over the southwestern United States.

The tumultuous weather conditions hit hard at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. 300 flights were canceled in multi-state interruptions of travel plans. Over 40% of scheduled flights were canceled. And it was the most affected airport in the nation.

Among the airlines impacted by the travel upheaval, Southwest Airlines' operations were also hit hard. They had 714 cancellations on a single day.

This accounted for nearly 17% of their daily flights. It was an indication of the challenges the storm caused for the entire airline industry.

As Hurricane Hilary became a Tropical Storm, she left heavy rains in her wake. Over the weekend the turbulent weather conditions began to recede.

The skies showed signs of clearing and the rain stopped in most locations.

Meanwhile, flight tracking website FlightAware still reported 273 delays and 274 cancellations on Monday. This underscores the lingering impact of the storm on air travel.

The Federal Aviation Administration's assessed the situation and provided insights into the exceptional nature of this weather phenomenon.

Travel plans disrupted

The agency highlighted that the affected region was ill-prepared for the intense rainfall, strong winds, and potential thunderstorms that Hurricane Hilary brought, setting it apart from typical weather patterns experienced by other parts of the country.

Although Hurricane Hilary was eventually downgraded to a tropical storm, its impact was far from trivial. The storm dumped a year's worth of rain on California, Nevada, and Arizona, marking a significant weather event that hadn't been witnessed in the region for over eight decades.

In the face of this disruption, major airlines, including Southwest, American Airlines, Delta, and United, demonstrated solidarity with travelers by waiving fees for flight changes. Recognizing the challenges posed by the storm, these airlines aimed to ease the burden on passengers faced with uncertain travel plans.

The disruption caused by Hurricane Hilary to air travel across the US highlights the challenges that airlines, airports, and passengers can face when dealing with unprecedented weather events.
