Antonio "AJ" Armstrong Jr., the son of an NFL player, has been handed a life sentence after being found guilty of capital murder. He was convicted in the tragic 2016 case of the murder of his parents, Antonio Sr. and Dawn Armstrong in a Houston, Texas suburb.

The verdict, reached after more than 10 hours of deliberation by a jury of seven men and five women, marked the culmination of a harrowing 11-day trial that featured the testimony of 31 witnesses. This was his third trial for the murders.

The ordeal began when AJ Armstrong, then a teenager, dialed 911 at 1:40 a.m. to report multiple gunshots emanating from his parents' bedroom. He informed the authorities that his 12-year-old sister was still asleep downstairs at the time.

Following an initial investigation of the crime scene, law enforcement honed in on Armstrong Jr. as a prime suspect.

This trial represented the third and final attempt by prosecutors to prove that the 23-year-old had taken the lives of his mother and father by shooting them. It was also the third time he has ped not guilty. The previous two trials had both resulted in hung juries.

His family believes AJ is innocent

Throughout the trial, many members of Armstrong Jr.'s family sat in the courtroom, anxiously awaiting the verdict. Among those in attendance were his sister, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of whom came to show their support.

Notably, two family members, his sister Kayra and his father's mother, Kay Winston, testified on his behalf during the proceedings.

When the judge announced the guilty verdict, AJ Armstrong Jr.'s wife, Kate, broke into tears.

Given that he was only 16 years old at the time of the murders, there is a possibility of parole after serving 40 years of his life sentence.

Rick DeToto, who served as A.J.’s defense attorney in his previous trials expressed his client's disappointment but praised his resilience, stating, "He's devastated, but he's one of the strongest young men I've ever known."

In response to the verdict, another member of the defense team, Chris Collings, revealed their intention to appeal the ruling and confirmed that they had already initiated the process.

Despite the challenges ahead, their immediate focus remains on providing support and strength to AJ and his family during this trying period. Collings acknowledged the shock and disbelief surrounding the verdict, stating, "Everybody's in shock and disbelief, and it's going to take some time to process everything that just occurred."

The prosecution team, led by John Jordan and Ryan Trask of Harris County, received praise from District Attorney Kim Ogg, who commended their dedication and commitment. Ogg emphasized that the case was about honoring two individuals who tragically lost their lives while imparting valuable life lessons to their children.

"In trying to speak for those who no longer had a voice to defend themselves or say what happened, our job was to find justice for them," Ogg said in a news conference. "Antonio Sr. and Dawn Armstrong died because they were trying to be good parents. Because they wanted their children to do right. Not to lie. To work. To be law-abiding, contributing adults. And for that, they paid with their lives."

The legal battle surrounding AJ Armstrong Jr.'s case has been marked by complexity.

Defense attorney Rick DeToto expressed frustration when a third trial was announced. He said the Houston Police had lost evidence and accused them of a poor investigation. He also highlighted the unwavering support of AJ's family and their belief in his innocence.

While the outcome of this trial represents a significant setback for AJ Armstrong Jr. and his defense team, they plan to appeal.

DeToto's statement from November underscores their determination: "We will not stop fighting for AJ"

As the legal battle continues, the tragedy of the Armstrong family serves as a somber reminder of the profound impact of a deeply troubling case that has gripped the attention of many.
