For many Americans, Halloween is an exciting time that's much looked forward to. Between dressing up in fun costumes, going trick-or-treating, and attending various parties, there's no denying that Halloween stands out from the remaining 364 days each year.

This holiday is also when many people purchase and eat candy. Some folks like to keep sweet treats in their homes for themselves. At the same time, others buy various candies to give out to trick-or-treaters or bring to Halloween events.

Traditionally, Tootsie rolls, M&Ms, sour patches, and other sweets are the most popular candies. There was a time when the same could also be said of candy corn. However, new data indicates that candy corn is actually losing popularity amongst the public.

A closer look at love lost for candy corn

Of the $3.7 billion that went to candy purchases in America last year, more than 60% of that accounted for various chocolates. Though as non-chocolate sweets now appear to be rising in sales, candy corn is not really seeing a boost.

As a matter of fact, since 2018, candy corn sales have been consistently declining. Yet, other candies, such as gummies and marshmallows, have seen a steady increase in sales over the same time period.

Officials reviewing the data now assert that the fall in sales sends a very clear message. Candy corn lacks the largely universal appeal of other Halloween treats. Moreover, when it comes to this particular confection, folks either really like it or really don't like it.

With that being said, Americans who are still interested in candy corn can almost certainly find packages of it at local stores near them.

Staying safe with candy

This Halloween is a day when many kids across the nation will dress up in costumes and go trick-or-treating in nearby neighborhoods. Whether they get chocolates, M&Ms, candy corn, or all of the above, there are still certain mindful actions parents should take to ensure their kids are safe.

Some great ways to make sure there are no nasty surprises in candy picked up during trick-or-treating are as follows:

• Make sure all candy wrappers are closed and sealed
• Throw away any candy wrappers with holes or tears
• Read the candy wrappers to make sure kids received actual candy and not something else (like drugs) posing as candy
