Gold Bars in Sen. Bob Menendez Bribery Scandal Linked to a 2013 Robbery

Gold bars

Gold bars seized in the FBI search of Senator Bob Menendez's residence are now tied to a 2013-armed robbery involving New Jersey businessman Fred Daibes. The bars' serial numbers now link the ongoing bribery case against Menendez and Daibes with the earlier robbery.

Menendez's wife, Nadine, allegedly gave two gold bars with matching serial numbers to a jeweler for sale.

The Bergen County prosecutor’s records detail that Daibes reported the 2013-armed robbery to Edgewater, New Jersey police. He reported the theft of $500,000 in cash and 22 gold bars.

Gold bars evidence

Several of the gold sticks recovered by the police during the robbery investigation were later linked to Daibes, the same individual now implicated in the bribery case against Menendez.

Photos of these bars also appeared in the bribery indictment against Menendez and Daibes.

The documentation, including "property release forms," was signed by Daibes in 2013 to reclaim his stolen valuables. These forms certified ownership and noted that each was stamped with unique serial numbers.

This gives the police a distinct chain of custody that could prove critical in the legal proceedings. It will be difficult for Menendez to claim that the Daibes-owned gold came from another source.

Legal analysts point out that this represents new challenges for the Menendez case.

NBC legal analyst Danny Cevallos remarks, "All of this spells bad news for Sen. Menendez because the chain of custody — it appears — is going to be really easy to prove up."

Bribery Charges

The narrative deepens as the FBI suggests a quid pro quo arrangement between Menendez and Daibes, involving attempts to influence the New Jersey U.S. attorney’s office during an investigation into Daibes' bank fraud in 2018.

Menendez has consistently denied any wrongdoing, questioned the existence of a quid pro quo and maintained innocence regarding bribery allegations.

Additional defendants, including Menendez's wife, Nadine, and others, are all pleading not guilty to the charges.

 Daibes faces accusations of bribery.

Menendez contends that making cash withdrawals from his savings account was normal for him. And the cash found at his home was his money.

Alleged Corruption

Menendez's alleged involvement in assisting businessman Wael Hana secure a halal meat inspection contract with the Egyptian government is cited as another instance of bribery and corruption.

Prosecutors claim that Menendez leveraged his position as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in exchange for payoffs.

The complex web of accusations extends to Menendez's dealings with Jose Uribe, involving attempts to influence an ongoing state attorney general’s investigation.

Menendez maintains his innocence and expresses confidence in addressing the government's claims in court. But the intersection of gold bars from a past robbery seems to tie Menendez and his wife tighter into the unfolding political and legal drama.
