FEMA Under Fire After Supervisor Instructed Florida Relief Workers to Skip Homes with Trump Signs

FEMA under Fire

A former supervisor of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reportedly directed relief workers to bypass homes displaying Trump signs while conducting post-hurricane outreach. A congressional investigation has begun, and FEMA is under fire.

Marn’i Washington, the FEMA supervisor at the center of the controversy, was dismissed after issuing instructions to disaster relief teams canvassing in Lake Placid, Florida, following Hurricane Milton. She gave written instructions to her team to "avoid homes advertising Trump."

Washington has since defended her actions, claiming her guidance was based on existing FEMA policies and not limited to her team.

She is also adamant that there should be an investigation, and she does not want to be a scapegoat for the agency’s policy.

The incident has ignited a broader debate over FEMA’s policies and its approach to aiding disaster survivors, regardless of political affiliations.

FEMA’s Response

FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell issued a statement on November 9 condemning the alleged actions of an unnamed employee, later confirmed to be Washington.

The statement emphasized the agency’s commitment to impartiality.

"One FEMA employee departed from these values to advise her survivor assistance team to not go to homes with yard signs supporting President-elect Trump," Criswell stated.

"I want to be clear to all of my employees and the American people, this type of behavior and action will not be tolerated at FEMA, and we will hold people accountable if they violate these standards of conduct."

According to The Daily Wire, at least 20 homes displaying Trump campaign signs or flags were overlooked by FEMA teams from late October to early November.

Anonymous FEMA workers reported that Washington had justified her directive under “best practices” to prioritize their safety, indicating that her actions were, in her view, in line with FEMA’s policies on “avoidance” and de-escalation.

Washington was summarily fired.

A Broader Policy or an Isolated Incident?

The fallout from Washington’s dismissal has raised questions about whether Washington’s instructions reflect a larger pattern within FEMA.

FEMA spokespersons have maintained that the directive was unauthorized and isolated, with Criswell labeling Washington’s actions as “reprehensible.”

She reaffirmed that FEMA’s core values call for unbiased aid to all citizens in disaster-stricken areas, irrespective of political views.

Despite FEMA’s insistence that Washington acted independently, the ex-employee publicly claimed that avoidance protocols similar to hers exist in other areas.

"Senior leadership will lie to you and tell you that they do not know," she stated. "But if you ask the DSA [disaster survivor assistance] crew leads and specialists what they are experiencing in the field they will tell you... this is not isolated."

According to Washington, the same policies was implemented in other states. She said that North Carolina was also using the tactics. And the policy was used to prevent confrontations with individuals displaying political signs.

She also suggested that this directive was not her idea. And was part of a wider approach to reduce confrontations in politically charged environments.

Congressional Investigation Looms

In response to the controversy at FEMA, Rep. James Comer, chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, announced a hearing to address the matter on November 19.

Washington expressed her support for the investigation, stating, "Please do [investigate], they will find this is not isolated. I state this over and over again, this is colossal. Demand for FEMA to give you those incident reports. They will substantiate what we are experiencing in the field."

As FEMA faces growing pressure to explain its policies, the agency's leadership has pledged to ensure that political biases do not affect disaster assistance.

However, with Washington’s claims challenging FEMA’s official narrative, the upcoming hearing is expected to shed more light on whether this was an isolated incident or part of a larger trend within the agency.
