In Yemassee, South Carolina, 43 rhesus macaque monkeys escaped from a research facility run by Alpha Genesis. The company specializes in nonhuman primate products and bio-research.
Local authorities have advised residents to secure doors and windows to prevent any of the animals from entering homes, as none of the monkeys had been recaptured by Friday morning.
The incident is the latest in a string of escapes from facilities handling primates, prompting concerns about both public safety and containment procedures.
The monkeys reportedly escaped after a door was left open by a caretaker. This is not the first time Alpha Genesis has faced such an incident; in 2016, 19 monkeys escaped from the facility but were recaptured within hours.
Similarly, last year in Pennsylvania, dozens of lab monkeys escaped after a transport truck crashed, though all were eventually accounted for.
UPDATE: One of the escaped monkeys was caught and returned on Saturday morning. 42 monkeys remain missing.
