The attack occurred around 4:12 a.m., when the suspect allegedly ignited the device and threw it toward the $27 million residence. Flames briefly flared at an exterior gate—like a sudden spark licking dry timber—before the individual fled on foot.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, officers responded swiftly to what they described as a “fire investigation.” Despite the alarming nature of the attack, no injuries were reported.

Threat Escalates to Company Headquarters

Roughly an hour later, the situation intensified. Just after 5 a.m., police were called to the Mission Bay neighborhood, where OpenAI maintains its headquarters.

There, a man matching the earlier suspect’s description allegedly threatened to set the building ablaze. Officers arriving at the scene quickly recognized him and took him into custody without further incident. His identity has not yet been released.

Company Confirms Incident, Employees Reassured

OpenAI—widely known for developing the chatbot ChatGPT—confirmed the chain of events in a statement, noting that both the residential attack and the threats against its offices occurred within hours of each other.

“Early this morning, someone threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman’s home and also made threats at our San Francisco headquarters,” a company spokesperson said. “Thankfully, no one was hurt.”

The company praised the rapid response by city police and confirmed it is cooperating fully with investigators.

Internally, employees were notified of the incident and reassured that there is no ongoing threat. However, the company said it would increase security and police presence around its Mission Bay offices as a precaution.

A Pattern of Rising Tensions

The attack arrives against a backdrop of heightened scrutiny and tension surrounding artificial intelligence. Last year, OpenAI temporarily secured its San Francisco offices following threats linked to an individual previously associated with an anti-AI activist group.
