Lauren Bullis killed in Georgia shooting

An Atlanta man now faces a cascade of charges after a chilling sequence of attacks unfolded over just a few hours, leaving two women dead and a man clinging to life. The violence, swift and disjointed like lightning strikes across a dark sky, drew national attention after one victim was identified as a Department of Homeland Security employee walking her dog.

At the center of the case is 26-year-old British native Olaolukitan Adon Abel, who authorities say carried out the attacks Monday across multiple locations in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

A night of violence spanning miles

Police say the first shooting erupted around 1 a.m. near a restaurant in Decatur. A woman, found riddled with gunshot wounds, was rushed to a hospital but later died, according to DeKalb County Police Chief Gregory Padrick. Her identity has not been publicly released.

Roughly an hour later, violence struck again—this time in Brookhaven, about 12 miles away. A 49-year-old unhoused man, asleep outside a grocery store, was shot multiple times. Brookhaven Police Chief Brandon Gurley described the shooting as random, saying the victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.

“It is apparent to us that it was a completely random attack on a member of our unhoused community,” Gurley said.

As dawn approached, the final and most high-profile attack unfolded more than 10 miles away in Panthersville. Officers responding to a call discovered Lauren Bullis suffering from both gunshot and stab wounds. She died at the scene.

Investigation connects the attacks

Authorities soon linked the three incidents, tracing a pattern through geography and timing that painted a disturbing picture of mobility and intent.

Later that day, Adon Abel was arrested during a traffic stop in Troup County near the Alabama border. He now faces two counts of malice murder, along with aggravated assault and firearms charges. Court records show he waived his initial court appearance Tuesday and does not yet have an attorney listed.

Investigators believe at least one victim—the wounded man—was targeted at random. They are still working to determine whether the other victims, including Bullis, were also chosen indiscriminately.

Federal response and scrutiny over citizenship

The killing of a federal employee quickly escalated the case to the national stage. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin issued a statement expressing grief and alarm, while raising questions about the suspect’s past.

“These acts of pure evil have devastated our department,” Mullin said, extending prayers to the victims’ families. He also noted that Adon Abel became a U.S. citizen in 2022 and referenced a history of alleged criminal activity, though he did not specify whether those incidents occurred before naturalization.

Online court records indicate that an individual with the same birth date—listed as Adon Olaolukitan—pleaded guilty last June in Chatham County to four misdemeanor counts of sexual battery.

Mullin added that under current policies, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has worked to prevent individuals with criminal histories from obtaining citizenship. However, longstanding law already bars most violent offenders, leaving uncertainty over whether any disqualifying record existed before Adon Abel’s naturalization.

Remembering Lauren Bullis

Beyond the headlines and investigation, the loss of Lauren Bullis reverberates deeply within the Department of Homeland Security and among those who knew her.

Bullis served in multiple roles within the DHS Office of Inspector General, including as an auditor and later as a team leader in the Office of Innovation. Colleagues described her as a steady source of warmth and encouragement.

In a statement, her family remembered her as “selfless, kind and compassionate,” adding that she found joy in running, reading and traveling.

“She deeply loved her family,” they said. “Her warmth and generosity touched everyone surrounding her.”

Ashley Toillion, a fellow DHS auditor based in Denver, recalled meeting Bullis at a conference last year. Their shared love of running quickly turned into friendship, with plans to meet again for a race at Disney World.

“You couldn’t meet her and not be her friend,” Toillion said, her voice breaking. “She was just the nicest, sweetest, most encouraging person I’ve ever met.”

Family reactions and ongoing investigation

Reached by phone, Toyin Adon Abel Jr declined to discuss his brother but expressed sympathy for the victims.

“I feel terrible for the victims, their families and their connections. It’s a horrible thing,” he said.

Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind the attacks, working to determine whether they were random acts of violence or part of a more targeted pattern.

For now, the case stands as a grim reminder of how quickly ordinary moments—a late-night walk, a place to sleep, a morning routine—can be shattered.
