A routine school morning in Hammond, Louisiana, shattered like glass under sudden pressure when a 13 years old shoots father during a heated dispute over attending school, leaving a community stunned and a family torn apart.

Authorities say the chaos unfolded on April 14 at approximately 7:30 a.m. outside Tangipahoa Alternative School, where a student refused to exit his father’s vehicle during the drop-off line. What began as a disciplinary disagreement quickly escalated into a tragedy that would end in death days later.

Police officials reported that after discussions with school staff and an officer, the father chose to take his son back home. But as the SUV pulled away from the school driveway, the situation took a catastrophic turn—like a spark igniting gasoline.

Gunfire, crash, and immediate lockdown

Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron stated that a single gunshot suddenly rang out from inside the vehicle. The SUV then veered out of control and slammed into a house across the street, turning a morning commute into a crash scene of shattered glass and confusion.

Inside the car was also a 5-year-old child, adding another layer of urgency and fear to the unfolding emergency.

Witnesses and officials said the teen exited the vehicle holding a firearm and walked toward the school entrance before being quickly detained by a responding school resource officer.

The school immediately went into lockdown. Officials described the response as nearly instantaneous—students were secured in classrooms within minutes, doors locked as the threat unfolded outside.

Father succumbs to injuries, charges escalated

The father was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, city officials confirmed on April 18 that he had died from his injuries.

“It is with deep sadness that we report the victim… has succumbed to his injuries,” the City of Hammond said, extending condolences to the grieving family.

Originally charged with attempted second-degree murder, the juvenile suspect now faces upgraded charges of second-degree murder following the father’s death. Officials noted that a Tangipahoa Parish grand jury indictment is required for the charge to become official.

The teen is currently held at the Florida Parishes Detention Center.

Investigation raises unanswered questions

Authorities say it remains unclear how the 13-year-old obtained the firearm or what triggered the fatal decision.

Chief Bergeron described the event as senseless and preventable, praising the rapid response of the school resource officer who intervened before further harm could occur.

“This type of violence is outrageous,” Bergeron said, emphasizing the critical role of security presence in schools during moments of crisis.
