Resident Evil: Veronica: Why the 2027 Remake Is the Horror Event We’ve Been Waiting For

If you were watching the Summer Game Fest 2026 showcase this past Friday, you know exactly what moment stopped the collective heart of the survival horror community. The stage lights dimmed, the ambient dread began to creep in, and just for a second, I found myself holding my breath. When the title card for Resident Evil: Veronica flashed on the screen, my inner fanboy didn’t just cheer—he wept a little.

After years of rumors, whispers in the darkest corners of Reddit, and more "leaks" than a submarine with a screen door, Capcom has finally done it. Resident Evil: Code: Veronica is getting the full RE Engine treatment. Coming in 2027, this isn’t just a remaster or a quick polish; it’s a reimagining of one of the most beloved, bizarre, and overlooked chapters in the franchise’s history.

As someone who has covered this industry for years—and who openly admits that Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village are essentially the gold standard for modern horror design—I am cautiously, wildly, and unapologetically optimistic.

Why Code: Veronica Deserved the Spotlight

For those who started their Resident Evil journey with the high-octane action of the Resident Evil 4 remake or the terrifying, claustrophobic hallways of the Baker estate, Code: Veronica might feel like a history lesson. Originally released on the Sega Dreamcast in 2000, it was the "lost" numbered entry that never was. It had the gothic atmosphere, the Redfield sibling drama, and a level of camp that could only be achieved at the turn of the millennium.

But let’s be honest: the original game is a bit of a relic. The fixed camera angles and tank controls, while charming in a "my-parents-found-this-in-the-attic" sort of way, haven't aged with the grace of the series' more recent outings.

That is precisely why this remake is the right move. Capcom has perfected the art of the "re-make." They didn’t just update textures; they rebuilt the experience of survival horror from the ground up with RE2, RE3, and RE4. By bringing the RE Engine to Rockfort Island and the frozen nightmares of Antarctica, they have the chance to take a cult classic and elevate it into a modern masterpiece. If they can make the Lycans in Village terrifying, just imagine what they’ll do with the Ashford twins.

A Plea to the Gods of Development: Don’t Pull a Hollywood

Now, we need to address the elephant—or rather, the Tyrant—in the room.

As a professional critic who has sat through every Resident Evil film adaptation since the early 2000s, I have developed a certain... cynicism regarding "cinematic" interpretations of this series. We have all seen it. We’ve seen Alice running on walls, we’ve seen plot points that ignore the source material with the reckless abandon of a Wrecking Ball, and we’ve seen characters who share nothing but a name with their video game counterparts.

If the movies were "fan fiction written by someone who saw a poster of a zombie once," the games are the actual soul of the franchise.

My plea to the development team at Capcom is simple: keep doing what you’re doing. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. You don’t need to add a Matrix-style slow-motion bullet-dodging mechanic to Claire Redfield. You don’t need to make the puzzles "simpler for a modern audience."

Part of the reason Resident Evil 7 and Village resonated so deeply with fans is that they understood the assignment: horror is about vulnerability. It’s about the scarcity of ammunition, the weight of the environment, and the slow, creeping realization that something is watching you from the shadows. Keep the camp, keep the high-stakes melodrama, but please—please—keep the heart of the original story intact. We want the gothic horror, the eccentric villains, and the emotional core of the Redfield siblings’ reunion. We don’t want a cinematic reboot that forgets what made the game great in the first place.

The 2027 Horizon

2027 feels like an eternity away, especially after that electrifying reveal trailer at Summer Game Fest. But if there is one thing we have learned from Capcom’s trajectory over the last several years, it is that they are playing the long game. They are meticulous. They are listening.

Seeing Claire Redfield—modeled with the kind of fidelity that makes her look like a real person rather than a polygon doll—walking through a chillingly detailed environment gives me goosebumps. It’s the visual storytelling that the series has become famous for. As a graphic designer and creative, I am particularly interested to see how they utilize the RE Engine to contrast the dark, stifling isolation of the prison island with the cold, expansive emptiness of the Antarctic research facility.

If the quality of the recent Resident Evil titles is any indicator, we are in for a treat. They have transformed the franchise from a niche survival horror series into a blockbuster juggernaut that manages to balance action, puzzle-solving, and genuine terror better than almost any other studio in the business.

So, to the folks at Capcom: take your time. Polish those shadows. Make sure the inventory management is just the right amount of stressful. We will be waiting. And in the meantime, I’ll be over here replaying Village for the tenth time, just to keep my aim sharp for when the horror returns.

Resident Evil: Veronica is officially on the map. And honestly? It’s about time.
