In a heartbreaking and mysterious tragedy, Judith Sheldon — daughter of legendary Hollywood director William Wyler — and her husband Wylie Sheldon were found dead Monday inside a parked, still-running Jeep on the side of Interstate 5 north of Redding, California.

The couple, longtime pillars of San Francisco’s arts and film community, had been en route to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival when they failed to show up as planned. California Highway Patrol discovered them around 5:46 p.m., with Judith, 84, in the driver’s seat and Wylie, 86, in the passenger seat. No signs of foul play or mechanical failure were immediately apparent, and the vehicle still had plenty of gas.

Authorities suspect extreme heat may have played a deadly role, with the Jeep’s fan running on high but the air conditioning reportedly not functioning — potentially blowing hot air into the cabin. No water or liquids were found inside.

The Real Story

This devastating discovery has sent shockwaves through San Francisco’s cultural circles, where the Sheldons were beloved figures. Judith, who appeared in small roles in her father’s classics The Best Years of Our Lives and Roman Holiday, went on to become a prominent advocate for the arts as chair of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival and a patron of the opera and performing arts scenes.

The couple’s sons are now left to grieve, and the full circumstances surrounding their deaths remain under investigation, with autopsies pending. While the exact cause is still unclear, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the hidden dangers of extreme heat, even for experienced travelers on familiar routes.

William Wyler, one of Hollywood’s all-time greats behind masterpieces like Ben-Hur, Mrs. Miniver, and The Heiress, left behind a towering legacy. Now, the unexpected loss of his daughter adds a poignant final chapter to a family that helped shape American cinema.
