Anthropic Emerges as AI Leader After Elon Musk Publicly Admits He Was Wrong

Anthropic has received an unexpected endorsement from one of its biggest competitors. Elon Musk publicly acknowledged that he had underestimated the artificial intelligence company, calling it the current leader in AI development.

The remarks represent a dramatic shift for Musk, who had previously been one of Anthropic's harshest critics. His comments underscore how rapidly the race to build advanced AI systems continues to evolve.

In a post on X, Musk said he had been "clearly wrong about Anthropic," praising the company's latest AI models and stating that he would not use his influence over computing infrastructure to disadvantage the company, despite competing against it in the fast-growing AI market.

The comments attracted widespread attention because Musk now leads SpaceX AI, a company directly competing with Anthropic while also providing critical computing infrastructure that Anthropic uses to train and operate its AI models.

Musk Reverses Course

Musk's statement came after an X user pointed out that SpaceX controls the computing resources Anthropic relies on through a multiyear agreement involving the Colossus 1 supercomputing facility in Memphis.

The user suggested Musk could effectively cripple Anthropic's AI operations by cutting off access to the massive computing cluster.

Instead, Musk rejected the idea.

"I was clearly wrong about Anthropic," Musk wrote. "They are obviously currently the leader in AI."

He added that he would never intentionally damage a competitor by denying access to computing resources.

Musk compared that philosophy to Tesla's decision to open-source many of its electric vehicle patents and to expand access to its Supercharger network for rival automakers. He also pointed to SpaceX's practice of launching satellites for competing companies without imposing discriminatory pricing or contract terms.

From Anthropic Critic to Supporter

The comments mark a remarkable reversal.

Throughout 2025 and early 2026, Musk repeatedly criticized Anthropic.

Among other remarks, he argued that the company had little chance of winning the AI race, questioned its long-term prospects, accused it of improperly obtaining training data, and criticized its approach to AI safety and governance.

The tone began changing in May 2026 after SpaceX and Anthropic reached an agreement involving the Colossus 1 supercomputer.

Following meetings with senior Anthropic employees, Musk wrote that everyone he met appeared highly competent and genuinely interested in building AI responsibly.

His latest comments go significantly further by publicly recognizing Anthropic as the industry's current leader.

Latest AI Models from Anthropic

Musk specifically praised Anthropic's Claude Mythos 5 and Claude Fable 5 models, which were introduced in June 2026.

According to independent AI benchmarking organizations cited in the original report, several Anthropic models currently rank among the highest-performing large language models available.

The company has focused heavily on developing AI systems capable of advanced reasoning, software development, scientific research, and enterprise applications while placing significant emphasis on AI safety.

Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers, including siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, to build increasingly capable AI systems while prioritizing responsible development and reducing catastrophic risks.

The company has attracted billions of dollars in investment from major technology firms and has become one of the leading competitors to OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Musk's own AI ventures.

Musk's Role in AI

Musk has played an influential role in the evolution of modern artificial intelligence.

In 2015, he helped co-found OpenAI alongside several other technology leaders. At the time, the organization was established as a nonprofit dedicated to developing advanced AI that would benefit humanity.

Musk later left OpenAI's board after disagreements over the company's direction and potential conflicts with Tesla's AI efforts.

Since then, he has repeatedly warned about the potential dangers of highly advanced AI, arguing that artificial general intelligence could present significant risks if developed without adequate safeguards.

Those concerns eventually led Musk to establish xAI in 2023. Earlier this year, xAI merged into SpaceXAI as part of a broader effort to combine AI research with SpaceX's massive computing infrastructure.

SpaceXAI recently introduced Grok 4.5, designed to compete directly with leading AI models including OpenAI, Google, and other major developers.

Computing Power Drives the AI Race

Modern AI development depends on enormous amounts of computing power.

Training frontier AI models requires hundreds of thousands of advanced graphics processing units (GPUs), most of which are supplied by Nvidia and housed in specialized data centers.

Reports indicate that Anthropic has leased the full capacity of the Colossus 1 supercomputing facility under a long-term agreement reportedly worth approximately $1.25 billion per month through 2029.

The arrangement highlights how today's AI competition extends beyond software development to include access to specialized hardware, electricity, networking infrastructure, and data centers capable of supporting increasingly sophisticated models.

What Musk Says About Anthropic

Musk's public endorsement carries unusual weight because it comes from both a direct competitor and the operator of infrastructure supporting Anthropic's AI systems.

While competition among leading AI companies remains intense, Musk's acknowledgment suggests that Anthropic has established itself as one of the industry's strongest performers—at least for now.

The AI landscape continues to evolve rapidly, however, with companies including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta, Microsoft, and SpaceXAI investing billions of dollars to develop increasingly capable systems for businesses, governments, researchers, and consumers.

As the competition accelerates, advances in AI are expected to shape industries ranging from healthcare and finance to manufacturing, education, scientific research, and national security.
