  • Hydropower damage dominates the estimate, with separate personal claims expected.
  • Global commercial insurance rates are falling despite persistent disaster risks.

Nepal’s floods could generate commercial insurance losses exceeding 20 billion Nepali rupees ($132.3 million), primarily from damaged hydropower projects, Oriental Insurance Company Nepal CEO Toton Chakraborty told Reuters on September 4.

The August 26 disaster damaged homes, bridges, roads and power facilities, according to Nepal’s government. Nepal’s government mobilized security forces and emergency services for rescue and relief. On September 5, rescuers pulled a Chinese worker alive from a hydropower tunnel, 10 days after the floods. Nepal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Associated Press.

The insurance figures require careful reading. Reuters cited regulatory data showing 583 flood-related claims totaling 25.87 billion rupees as of August 31. Chakraborty said these largely reflected insured exposure pending detailed surveys. They are not confirmed payouts. Some policies may also cover revenue lost when repairs delay commercial operations. Reuters report.

Worldwide, insurers entered the second half of 2026 after a comparatively moderate start. Swiss Re Institute estimated first-half insured catastrophe losses at $42 billion, the lowest comparable total since 2020. Economic losses reached approximately $100 billion, leaving roughly $58 billion uninsured. Severe thunderstorms, particularly in the United States, remained the largest insured-loss driver. Swiss Re attributed the relatively favorable result partly to where storms struck: many major outbreaks missed the most heavily insured concentrations of property. Its assessment found no structural retreat in catastrophe risk. Swiss Re Institute.

The burden varies sharply by geography. Munich Re estimated that Venezuela’s June 24 earthquake sequence caused approximately $30 billion in economic losses, with less than $1 billion insured. In Europe and North America, severe heat created additional pressure through lost productivity, production interruptions and infrastructure damage. Such losses can be difficult to quantify because heat often disrupts economic activity without immediately destroying property. Munich Re disaster review.

Insurance pricing, meanwhile, is moving unevenly. Marsh reported that global commercial insurance rates fell an average of 6% in the second quarter, the eighth consecutive quarterly decline. Property rates dropped 12%, while casualty rates rose 2%, driven largely by U.S. conditions. These are commercial-market averages; they do not establish what an individual homeowner or hydropower operator will pay. Marsh market index.

Reinsurance—the protection insurers purchase for themselves—is also becoming more competitive. Aon reported record global reinsurance capital of $790 billion at March 31. Insurers secured double-digit price reductions and improved terms on property catastrophe placements during June and July renewals. The firm also reported growing demand for protection as buyers used favorable conditions to expand coverage. Aon renewal report.

Nepal’s experience could nevertheless influence how individual infrastructure risks are assessed. Aon’s Asia power leader, Benjamin Ng, told Reuters that exposed projects could face narrower coverage, lower limits and higher premiums. Future policy terms will help determine how much disaster risk developers must finance themselves. Reuters report.

It’s sad that humans who were killed in these incidents are just numbers, all that media cares about is the money that comes afterwards… we are talking about thousands of devastated families who lost a loved one but seems like economy is a bigger issue here.
