Iranian twins Taraneh and Romina Rahimi, 20, are facing drastically different fates after being arrested in connection with anti-government protests in Iran. Taraneh has been sentenced to death, while Romina received a 25-year prison sentence.

Their family says the sisters were subjected to severe abuse in custody, including beatings, broken bones and having their hair pulled out.

The case has drawn international attention because of allegations that Taraneh was forced to confess after prison guards threatened to sexually assault her sister.

The sisters' relatives say the confessions were obtained under duress and that the defendants were denied adequate access to their lawyers.

Iranian Twins Arrested After January Protests

Taraneh and Romina were 19 and still in high school when they participated in demonstrations in January 2026. The sisters were later arrested in Isfahan and became two of 16 defendants prosecuted in connection with the protests.

According to the family, masked men arrived at the sisters' home during the night and took them into custody. Their relatives spent months trying to determine where they had been taken.

The sisters eventually were located at Dowlatabad prison in Isfahan. Their mother, Marzieh Nourmohammadi, was allowed to see them in May, but the condition of the young women reportedly left her unable to recognize them immediately.

Their U.S.-based cousin, Masoud Nourmohammadi, told news organizations that the sisters had swollen faces and bodies, broken knuckles and elbows and missing hair. He said their mother recognized them only after hearing their voices.

Allegations of Torture and Forced Confession

The family alleges that the sisters endured months of physical abuse while imprisoned. Reports describe broken bones and severe injuries, while relatives say the women's hair had been ripped out during their detention.

The most serious allegation concerns Taraneh's confession. According to her family, guards threatened to rape Romina unless Taraneh signed a confession acknowledging participation in the protests.

Taraneh was subsequently sentenced to death. Romina was sentenced to 25 years in prison. The sisters' relatives maintain that the women did not commit violent acts and say the case against them is based on coerced statements rather than credible evidence.

Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported that the sisters are among 16 people tried in Isfahan in connection with the January demonstrations. The case has involved allegations of torture, forced confessions and severe mistreatment of defendants.

Charges Carry Severe Penalties

The defendants have been accused of offenses including involvement with Molotov cocktails and attacks against Iranian security forces. According to reports, the charges also included moharebeh, or "waging war against God," a capital offense under Iranian law.

Nourmohammadi has criticized the proceedings and said the family believes the sisters are being used as an example to intimidate others from participating in demonstrations.

The family has filed complaints concerning the alleged torture and sexual-abuse threats, but relatives say those complaints have not advanced through the courts.

Lawyers for the sisters are preparing an appeal, although similar appeals involving other defendants in the Isfahan case have reportedly been unsuccessful.

Death Penalty Raises International Concerns

The Rahimi sisters' case comes amid a broader crackdown on protesters and political dissidents in Iran. The Guardian reported that Iran had executed more than 500 people in 2026, including people connected to the January protests.

Human rights organizations have repeatedly criticized Iran's use of the death penalty and raised concerns about trials involving protesters, alleged torture and forced confessions.

For Taraneh's family, the immediate concern is whether her death sentence will be carried out before her appeal can be heard. Nourmohammadi said the family is attempting to draw international attention to the case while lawyers pursue available legal options.

The sisters' story has become another focal point in the debate over Iran's treatment of protesters and the use of capital punishment against political defendants.
