A South Carolina woman is behind bars after investigators accused her of trying to collect thousands of dollars through an allegedly fabricated insurance claim — a case that authorities say involved falsified medical and accident records.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) charged 49-year-old Trevon Rena Dawson on Friday, Oct. 16, with presenting a false insurance claim valued at more than $2,000 but less than $10,000, forgery involving a value below $10,000, and forgery without a specified dollar amount.

The investigation began at the request of the South Carolina Department of Insurance, which asked SLED to examine the circumstances surrounding the claim.

According to arrest warrants, Dawson allegedly submitted a fraudulent claim to ReliaStar Life Insurance Company, also known as Voya, around July 15, 2015.

Investigators allege she claimed to have suffered injuries in a vehicle crash that required hospitalization at Greenville Memorial. The potential insurance benefits associated with the claim were calculated at approximately $8,140.

But authorities say the claim was supported by documents that had been altered. Investigators allege Dawson submitted a modified medical summary and collision report to substantiate her account of the crash and injuries.

The alleged scheme placed key records at the center of the investigation, as authorities examined whether the documents were used to secure a payout that would not otherwise have been owed.

Investigators Say Dawson Admitted the Claim Was Fake

During a voluntary statement, SLED agents said Dawson acknowledged that the insurance claim was fraudulent and that the supporting documents had been altered, according to investigators.

The allegations led to three charges: presenting a false insurance claim for a value between $2,000 and $10,000, forgery involving a value below $10,000, and forgery where no dollar amount was specified.

Following her arrest, Dawson was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center.

The South Carolina Department of Insurance will prosecute the case.

The allegations remain part of a criminal case, and the charges will be addressed through the legal process.
