Election Day 2026: Voters Decide Control of Congress as Record 54 Million Ballots Already Cast in High-Stakes Midterms

Election Day 2026 midterms

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Americans are voting today in the 2026 midterm elections, a high-stakes contest that will decide whether Republicans keep their razor-thin grip on Congress for the final two years of President Donald Trump's term or whether Democrats seize at least one chamber and gain the power to investigate, block and reshape the White House agenda.

Polls opened across the East Coast this morning with turnout already running at historic levels. According to figures cited by the Associated Press, more than 54 million ballots had been cast in early and mail voting before Election Day, roughly nine million more than at the same point in the 2022 midterms. Both parties are claiming the surge as proof that their voters are fired up.

The Senate: Four Seats Stand Between Democrats and Control

Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate. Democrats need a net gain of four seats to win the chamber outright, since Vice President JD Vance would break a 50-50 tie in the GOP's favor. Republicans need to finish with at least 50 seats to keep control.

Fox News Power Rankings list seven toss-up races: Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Nebraska, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas. Kansas was shifted from Lean Republican to Toss-up just hours before the polls opened, a sign of how widely the political map has moved in the closing days. In Kansas, Democrat Adam Hamilton is challenging Republican Sen. Roger Marshall; a Hamilton victory would make him the first Democrat in nearly a century to win a Senate race in the state.

Democrats are also playing defense. Seats they currently hold in Michigan, Minnesota and New Hampshire are viewed as potentially vulnerable. In Michigan, the race took a surprising turn this week when Rep. Haley Stevens endorsed Republican Mike Rogers, a move that stunned many in her own party.

The House: A Majority Hanging by a Thread

Republicans hold what analysts describe as a razor-thin House majority, and Democrats need a net gain of just three seats to reach the 218 needed for control. Fox News Power Rankings suggest Democrats could climb as high as 240 seats on a strong night, while a good night for Republicans might leave them near 212.

One district is being watched as a bellwether: Kentucky's 6th. Trump carried it by 15 points in 2024, yet it looks close this cycle, according to Fox News contributor Remy Numa. If Republicans struggle in a district like that one, it could signal a much larger Democratic wave.

Governors, Ballot Measures and the Fight Over Elections Themselves

Thirty-six governorships are on the ballot, with Republicans currently holding 26 statehouses to Democrats' 24. Toss-up gubernatorial contests include Alaska, Nevada, Georgia and Wisconsin. Beyond the candidates, voters in many states face a thicket of ballot initiatives, with some 145 statewide measures nationwide, according to Fox News.

Among the most closely watched: California's Proposition 40, a one-time 5 percent tax on residents worth more than $1 billion; a Washington referendum on repealing a 9.9 percent tax on income over $1 million; abortion measures in Missouri, Idaho, Virginia and Nevada; and redistricting measures in Maryland, Missouri and Colorado. Voter ID or noncitizen voting restrictions appear on ballots in 11 states.

Trump's Closing Message

Trump spent the final stretch of the campaign urging supporters to turn out. Speaking in the closing hours, he predicted Republicans would hold both chambers. "We're going to win and let's make the next two years bigger and better and stronger than ever before," the president said, according to Fox News. Republican National Committee Chairman Joe Gruters echoed the urgency: "If our voters turn out, we win." Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin has urged voters to flip the House and take the Senate.

The legal skirmishing has been intense. On the eve of the election, the Supreme Court declined the administration's emergency bid to set aside more than 20,000 California mail-in ballots, a ruling that underscored how fiercely the two sides have fought over the mechanics of voting.

What It Means for Americans

The outcome will shape everything from tax policy and health care to immigration enforcement, tariffs and the ongoing conflict with Iran. A Democratic House would gain subpoena power and control of spending bills; a Democratic Senate would hold the keys to judicial and Cabinet confirmations. A Republican sweep would give Trump a largely unchecked runway through January 2029.

Because so many ballots were cast early and many states count mail ballots for days, the final result may not be known tonight. Close Senate races in particular could take time to resolve, and recounts or legal challenges are possible in several states. Polls close in stages from 6 p.m. Eastern in parts of Kentucky and Indiana to late-night closings in Alaska.

Voters still in line when polls close are entitled to cast their ballots in nearly every state. Election officials urge Americans to rely on official county and state results rather than unverified social media claims as returns come in.

USA Herald will continue to follow the returns as they develop.
