Tesla to end Cybertruck production as Elon Musk focuses on robotics

Tesla cybertruck production ending

Tesla's futuristic Cybertruck, a stainless-steel electric pickup that once promised to revolutionize the automotive industry, is approaching a major turning point. The electric vehicle maker plans to wind down production of the controversial truck next year, as CEO Elon Musk shifts the company's manufacturing focus toward its autonomous Cybercab.

In a post on social media, Musk announced that Tesla would begin reducing Cybertruck production at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year, marking a significant change for a vehicle that generated enormous attention before its arrival.

"Tesla will be winding down production of the Cybertruck at Gigafactory Texas around the middle of next year to make room for increased Cybercab production," Musk wrote.

The Texas facility is currently the only factory producing the Cybertruck, leaving the vehicle's future uncertain as Tesla prepares to redirect manufacturing capacity toward its next major project.

Tesla Cybertruck Production Ending as Sales Struggle to Gain Momentum

The Cybertruck's journey from a highly anticipated prototype to a production vehicle has been anything but smooth.

First unveiled in 2019, the angular electric pickup eventually entered production for the 2024 model year. Its unconventional stainless-steel exterior and futuristic design made it one of the most recognizable vehicles on the road.

Yet the attention did not translate into sustained commercial success.

Tesla does not publish individual sales figures for each vehicle model, but Kelley Blue Book estimates indicate that Cybertruck sales fell 48% from 2024 to 2025. Sales continued to slide, declining another 28% during the first nine months of 2026, according to the same estimates.

The numbers paint a stark picture for a vehicle that Musk once predicted could eventually reach annual production of 250,000 units.

Tesla sold 38,965 Cybertrucks in 2024, but deliveries dropped to 20,237 in 2025. Through the first three quarters of 2026, the company sold just 11,586 units.

The possibility of production ending around mid-2027 suggests the Cybertruck may have a relatively short manufacturing lifespan, although Tesla could theoretically move production to another facility.

Such a move, however, appears unlikely given the model's declining sales and its continued struggle to meet Musk's ambitious early projections.

Political Controversies and Quality Problems Weigh on Tesla

The Cybertruck's difficulties have extended beyond the showroom floor.

Tesla vehicles, particularly the Cybertruck because of its distinctive appearance, became a political flashpoint as Musk increasingly aligned himself with President Donald Trump and right-leaning political causes.

The shift unfolded amid growing political divisions in the United States and Europe, placing the automaker at the center of a debate that extended well beyond electric vehicles.

Tesla's European sales fell 49% during the first two months of 2025, even as the broader electric vehicle market continued to expand.

Musk's endorsement of Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany party during national elections also sparked widespread condemnation, further intensifying the political controversy surrounding the billionaire and his companies.

The Cybertruck faced another obstacle: quality-control concerns.

The vehicle experienced several recalls within months of its debut, raising questions about its reliability and manufacturing quality. For a pickup positioned as a radical departure from traditional trucks, the problems threatened to undermine its appeal among potential buyers.

Despite the enormous anticipation surrounding its launch, the Cybertruck never achieved widespread adoption, with sales beginning to weaken soon after it entered the market.

Cybertruck's High Price Creates Another Hurdle

The truck's premium pricing has also presented a challenge.

Tesla currently limits Cybertruck orders to the approximately $90,000 Premium All-Wheel Drive model and the six-figure Cyberbeast version.

The more than $80,000 Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive variant remains listed on Tesla's website, suggesting the company could reopen orders for that configuration before production winds down.

However, the vehicle's steep price tag has made it difficult to attract a broader audience, particularly as competition in the electric pickup market intensifies.

For buyers who were drawn to the Cybertruck's unconventional design but deterred by its cost, the potential return of the less expensive configuration could offer another opportunity to purchase the vehicle.

Cybercab Takes Center Stage at Gigafactory Texas

As the Cybertruck's production outlook dims, Tesla is preparing to shift its attention toward the Cybercab, its autonomous vehicle project.

Musk's announcement indicates that the company intends to use the Texas facility's manufacturing capacity to support increased Cybercab production.

The move reflects Tesla's broader ambitions to expand beyond conventional electric vehicles and strengthen its position in autonomous transportation.

Although the Cybertruck's future remains uncertain, Tesla's decision to prioritize the Cybercab suggests that the company is preparing for a new chapter in its manufacturing strategy.

The electric pickup's distinctive design once symbolized Tesla's willingness to challenge automotive conventions. Now, its anticipated production wind-down could mark the end of one of the company's most ambitious vehicle experiments.

For a truck that arrived with enormous expectations, the road ahead appears increasingly narrow.
