This year has marked significant advancements in AI assistants, with major players like ChatGPT and Google's Gemini capturing the spotlight.

In response, Amazon has been quietly working on a substantial update to its voice assistant, Alexa, which is set to be relaunched as Alexa 2.0 and Alexa Plus. 

According to an online report by The Washington Post, the revamped Alexa will debut in October with updated AI features designed to make the assistant more engaging and versatile.

A More "Charismatic" AI Assistant

This new version is designed not only to enhance the user experience but also to compete directly with Siri, ChatGPT and Microsoft's Copilot. For the first time, Amazon will also introduce a web UI version of Alexa, further expanding its reach.

The upcoming version of Alexa is expected to be a significant departure from the classic model. 

The report suggests that the improved Alexa Plus may come with a subscription fee, potentially costing "as much as $10 a month," while the current version of Alexa will be rebranded as "classic Alexa."

The Post's report, which is based on "internal documents," indicates that Amazon is still finalizing decisions regarding pricing, subscription structure, and the product name.

The company is carefully considering how best to position Alexa 2.0 in a highly competitive market.

Challenges in Development of Metis

Amazon's efforts to upgrade Alexa have not been without challenges. The company has reportedly struggled with the development of Alexa 2.0, leading to delays in shipment and significant financial losses related to its Echo smart speakers.

In June, reports surfaced that the AI technology powering Alexa 2.0 was "nowhere near ready," with former employees describing the organization as "beset by structural dysfunction and technological challenges."

These challenges have placed Amazon behind competitors like Google, Microsoft, and Meta in the race to develop AI-powered chatbots and agents.

In a bid to catch up, Amazon has been working on a new chatbot, internally dubbed "Metis," though it remains unclear whether this AI technology will be integrated into the new Alexa.

New Features: AI Assistants

Amazon's upgraded AI assistant aims to challenge industry giants with new features and a potential subscription model.

Despite development hurdles, the new Alexa 2.0 is expected to introduce a range of innovative features that could set it apart from its predecessors and competitors.

 One of the most notable is the ability to recognize individual voices and learn about users through conversation. This feature builds on the existing Voice ID technology but is expected to be more advanced, allowing Alexa to provide a more personalized experience.

A standout feature in the new Alexa is the "Smart Briefing" tool, designed to deliver "daily, AI-generated summaries of news articles" tailored to a user's preferences. Given the current political climate, especially during an election year, the accuracy and clarity of this feature will be crucial.

The internal documents cited by The Washington Post highlight that "AI features that help customers curate, summarize, and explore current events" were among the top customer requests.

This focus on customization and user engagement is likely to resonate with a broad audience.

Additionally, Alexa 2.0 will offer enhanced support for finding recipes and accommodating dietary restrictions, another area where customers have expressed a strong desire for more assistance. 

These AI assistants will also include a "shopping scout" feature, enabling users to ask conversational questions about products on Amazon. Examples include, “Are there any deals on headphones?" or "What colors is this shoe available in?"

Alexa will even notify users when items they’ve viewed go on sale.

Controversial Features 

Perhaps the most controversial new feature of Alexa 2.0 is its targeted use for children. The leaked documents describe a new experience called "Explore with Alexa 2.0."  

This feature allows "verified" children to engage in "back-and-forth, exploratory conversations with Alexa about any topic under the sun." It is intended to be "safe and moderated," but it has sparked debate among experts about the appropriateness of smart speakers for children.

As Amazon prepares to launch Alexa 2.0, the company faces the dual challenge of meeting high consumer expectations while addressing concerns about privacy, accuracy, and the ethical implications of AI-powered assistants.
