In a stunning reversal three years after one of the most watched trials in modern American history, the South Carolina Supreme Court has granted Alex Murdaugh a new trial in the murders of his wife Maggie and son Paul.

In a unanimous ruling issued Wednesday, the justices determined that Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill “egregiously attacked” Murdaugh’s credibility and “placed her fingers on the scales of justice” by improperly influencing the jury.

Hill has denied trying to sway the jury, claiming she only told them to pay attention. However, the Supreme Court ruled that her conduct was unprecedented and crossed a critical line.
