Saturday tens of thousands of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro took to the streets in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city. The anti-government rallies took place on the country’s Independence Day where the massive crowds also protested the Supreme Court’s ban on Elon Musk’s X (formerly known as Twitter).
Some of the protestors claim that the recent ban on the social media platform highlights a fierce struggle over free speech and censorship.
On August 30, 2024, Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered the platform to be taken offline. The judge accused Musk of refusing to comply with court orders to remove accounts spreading hate speech and misinformation.
This decision has divided the nation, bringing global attention to the growing debate on social media regulation.

The ban comes at a pivotal time in Brazil, with municipal elections set for October 6. Conservative politicians have seized on the court’s decision to galvanize their supporters, accusing the judiciary of attempting to censor right-leaning voices ahead of the elections.
Many view this move as a direct attack on free speech, rallying supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, whose term ended 20 months ago.
The protests against the ban serve as a critical barometer for Bolsonaro's enduring influence. While he is no longer in office, the demonstrations show that Bolsonaro, along with his supporters, remains a potent political force as the country heads into municipal elections.

The Battle Between Musk and de Moraes
At the center of the controversy is the conflict between Elon Musk and Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
De Moraes banned X following months of legal wrangling with Musk, who refused to remove accounts that the court accused of disseminating harmful content.
This clash is not just a legal issue but a cultural and political flashpoint, as it places Brazil at the center of a broader global debate over the regulation of social media.
De Moraes’ critics argue that his actions have crossed the line into censorship. Supporters of Bolsonaro, who have rallied behind Musk, believe that the judge is stifling free speech under the guise of combating hate speech.
Francisco Carlos, a businessman draped in Brazil’s flag at a São Paulo protest, echoed these sentiments, stating, “Our freedom is at stake…they used to burn books to silence people, now they ban social media.” Carlos, once an avid user of X, called for the impeachment of de Moraes, a sentiment shared by many protesters.

Thousands of Bolsonaro supporters, dressed in Brazil’s national colors of green and yellow, took to the streets. Street vendors sold flags bearing Musk’s face and T-shirts depicting de Moraes in jail, while heavily armed police watched over the massive gathering.
