Last month, the Barbie movie officially made a splash in film theaters. Since it arrived, women everywhere have been speaking out about Barbie inspired them and reminded them of their childhoods.

In another interesting turn of events, some women even revealed that seeing Barbie encouraged them to reevaluate their current relationships with their boyfriends.

Barbie continues to receive high praise for its focus on women's empowerment, women's experiences, growing up as a girl, and finding yourself as you go through life.

With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 88%, there's no denying the film landed well with audiences. Though, as of today, Barbie set a new record by overtaking $1 billion at the global box office.

A major milestone for a female-directed film

With Greta Gerwig co-writing and directing Barbie, she's made history as the very first solo woman director with a film exceeding $1 billion.

As Barbie currently stands at $1.03 billion globally, much of the film's success remains attributed to pre-release marketing, along with its ability to touch the hearts and minds of women around the world.

In a bit of foreshadowing, news recently broke that Margot Robbie, the lead actress portraying "Stereotypical Barbie," predicted, after reading the film's script, that it could make $1 billion.

Despite Robbie initially saying she was "overselling" at the time, it turns out her prediction was very much correct.

Barbie 2?

With the major international success of Barbie, questions have naturally come up regarding the possibility of a sequel. On social media, fans of the movie continue to share their interest in seeing another film that picks up where the first one left off.

So far, there is no contract in place for either Gerwig or Robbie to return for Barbie 2. Though, this could very much change later down the line, given the film's success.

In the meantime, theaters hosting Barbie showings continue to sell out. Many moviegoers are also dressing up in pink and sharing photos of themselves at the movies on their social media accounts.

The weeks and months ahead will likely reveal more information about whether the world can look forward to a return of Margot Robbie's iconic Barbie.
