Toxicology reports confirmed the presence of alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant in his system at the time of death. Investigators concluded that Payne suffered “multiple traumas” as a result of his fall.

Authorities have ruled out self-harm, citing evidence that Payne did not adopt a reflexive posture to protect himself during the fall. This finding suggests he may have fallen “in a state of semi or total unconsciousness.” The prosecutor’s office hypothesized that Payne might have attempted to leave his room via the balcony, leading to the fatal fall.
