Digital Media Confusion: Recognizing Content “Imagined with AI”

Imagined with AI

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, announced its new AI transparency policy.  Meta aims to address the escalating concerns surrounding AI generated media with the label “Imagined with AI.”

Meta Labels

Nick Clegg, Meta's president for global affairs, emphasized in a February 6 blogpost the importance of providing users with the necessary tools to discern AI-generated content. The introduction of the label "Imagined with AI" is a proactive measure.

The ever-evolving digital world is fed by rapidly generative AI, Meta's initiative comes as a response to the pressing need for enhanced scrutiny over rapidly evolving technologies such as generative AI.

With the 2024 Presidential election fast approaching there is a rise in political and social polarization.

Experts are warning that a convergence of events at home and abroad, online all social media platforms is becoming increasingly tense.

In an environment of political and social unrest the danger of propaganda, disinformation and threats are out of control.

Imagined with AI

Against this backdrop, Meta is claiming its decision to intensify the use of labels on AI-generated images underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in online content.

Meta plans to implement these labels across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, in different languages across diverse communities worldwide.

Despite this proactive stance, experts caution against the imminent threat posed by AI-generated disinformation, particularly in the realm of audio and video content.

Manipulated recordings, such as the recent instance involving a fabricated robocall impersonating President Joe Biden, underscores the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to address this growing problem.

While Meta expresses optimism regarding its ability to detect AI-generated images, challenges persist in identifying manipulated audio and video content.

Clegg added that the company wants users to be able to recognize every layer of generative AI.

Layering Markers

“When photorealistic images are created using our Meta AI feature, we do several things to make sure people know AI is involved, including putting visible markers that you can see on the images, and both invisible watermarks and metadata embedded within image files." He wrote.

Meta’s AI Research lab FAIR has been releasing research that has “an invisible watermarking technology we’re developing called Stable Signature.”

The watermarking mechanism is integrated directly into the image generation process. This can be used so that open-source models can’t disable the watermarking.

Missing Industry Standards

The absence of industry-wide standards for detecting AI-generated media is still an issue.  And Clegg admits limitations of its current capabilities and calls for collaborative efforts within the tech industry to devise robust solutions.

In the absence of standardized protocols, Meta emphasizes the importance of user accountability in disclosing AI-generated content. Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in penalties to encourage responsible online behavior.

Meta's labeling system represents a step towards promoting transparency and combating the proliferation of AI-generated misinformation.

The ability to distinguish between real and synthetic AI content is an important safeguard for the online world. And Big Tech is just beginning the process of protecting its users.
