In 2009, Jeremy was diagnosed with severe depression. According to a GoFundMe campaign started by Bailey, he survived at least four suicide attempts, including one in 2012 that left him with critical injuries after crashing into a semi-truck.
“When he regained consciousness, I felt both awe and relief, realizing that his attempt had failed,” Bailey wrote on the fundraiser page, which raised over $20,300.
Community in Mourning
The tragedy has left the town of Cozad and surrounding communities in mourning, especially given the family’s commitment to openness and helping others through their nonprofit.
Bailey Koch was a beloved teacher in the area. Tributes continue to pour in from former students, friends, and mental health advocates.
“Bailey was a light to so many. She didn’t just talk about mental health—she lived her truth to help others,” said a family friend in a public post. “This loss is incomprehensible.”
The murder-suicide investigation continues. Law enforcement and mental health professionals are urging the public to look out for signs of crisis among loved ones and seek help when needed.
