Guilty Plea

A former Federal Express Driver has received a guilty verdict and been sentenced to death in a devastating Texas case that has drawn national attention.

Tanner Horner, 34, pleaded guilty to capital murder in the killing of 7-year-old Athena Strand, a crime prosecutors described as calculated and horrific.

Crime That Shocked North Texas

The case unfolded in 2022 in the small town of Paradise, near Fort Worth. Horner, who worked as a delivery driver for FedEx, was dropping off a Christmas package at Athena’s home when he abducted her.

Authorities said the child’s body was discovered two days later after an intensive search effort.

During trial proceedings, jurors were presented with extensive evidence, including video and audio recordings from inside the delivery van. The recordings captured Athena’s final moments, revealing a chilling sequence of events that left courtroom observers visibly shaken.

Jury Delivers Guilty Verdict for Maximum Punishment

After weeks of testimony, jurors determined that Horner posed a continuing threat to society and that no mitigating factors justified a sentence of life imprisonment without parole. The court handed down the death penalty following the guilty plea.

Prosecutor James Stainton argued that Horner repeatedly lied to investigators, initially claiming the child’s death was accidental before evidence contradicted that account. The prosecution described the case as one of overwhelming proof, supported by forensic findings and recorded evidence.

Horner reportedly showed no visible reaction when the sentence was read, according to courtroom observers and coverage of the proceedings.

Evidence that Killer was Federal Express Driver

One of the most harrowing aspects of the trial involved audio recordings from the delivery vehicle. Jurors heard Athena pleading to go home and asking why she was being harmed. The recordings, which lasted more than an hour, included distressing sounds and conversations that underscored the brutality of the crime.

A medical examiner testified that Athena died from blunt force injuries combined with smothering and strangulation. The testimony reinforced the prosecution’s argument that the crime was intentional and violent.

Defense Arguments for Federal Express Driver

Horner’s defense attorney, Steven Goble, acknowledged the severity of the evidence but urged jurors to consider mitigating factors. These included claims of neurological and developmental challenges, as well as exposure to harmful substances during childhood.

The defense argued for a life sentence instead of the death penalty, citing mental health concerns and Horner’s background.

However, jurors ultimately rejected these arguments, concluding that the nature of the crime outweighed any mitigating circumstances.

Guilty Verdict Impacts Community and Family

The case has deeply affected the local community and Athena’s family. It was revealed during the trial that the package Horner delivered contained a Christmas gift for Athena—a detail that further amplified the tragedy.

The proceedings were moved from Wise County to Fort Worth to ensure a fair trial, given the intense public attention surrounding the case.

Legal and Public Response to Guilty Verdict

The sentencing marks one of the most severe outcomes in recent Texas criminal cases and highlights ongoing debates around capital punishment. The case has also raised questions about safety protocols for delivery services and background screening processes.
