American drivers are finally catching a break at the pump, with national average gas prices slipping below $4 per gallon for the first time since March — offering a much-needed moment of relief after more than three months of pain driven by the Iran war.

As of Friday morning, the average price nationwide had fallen to $3.999, according to AAA data, down sharply from this year’s peak of $4.56. While still more than 34% higher than pre-war levels, the drop reflects a broader decline in oil prices, which have tumbled 14% in just the last five days as markets grow more optimistic about a potential peace deal with Iran.

U.S. crude was trading around $75 per barrel Thursday, while international Brent sat near $79 — the lowest levels since the conflict began on February 28.

This welcome dip in gas prices comes as a direct result of easing tensions and improving sentiment around U.S.-Iran negotiations. However, experts are urging caution. Commercial and strategic oil stockpiles that helped cushion the earlier price spikes are now critically low. The key hub in Cushing, Oklahoma, reached “operational stress” levels, and the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve hit its lowest point since 1983.

Chevron CEO Mike Wirth warned that these backup measures won’t last forever, predicting potential renewed pressure as early as July or August if a full agreement isn’t reached and the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed.

While the Trump administration has signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran, a comprehensive deal is still weeks — or months — away. For now, drivers are enjoying lower prices, but the underlying vulnerabilities in global energy markets mean this relief could prove temporary.

The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether falling gas prices become a sustained trend or just a brief pause before the next surge.
