Those Republicans who opposed the bill are concerned that the legislation is not beneficial for all Americans. Their constituents will see tax increases. Among the GOP members who voted against the tax reform bill was House Appropriations Committee Chairman Rodney Frelinghuysen. He explained that the legislation will “hurt New Jersey families.”
The other Republican representatives who rejected the legislation include Leonard Lance, Frank LoBiondo, and Chris Smith from New Jersey. Representatives Dan Donovan, John Faso, Pete King, Elise Stefanik and Lee Zeldin from New York also opposed the bill. The Republicans from California who voted no were Representatives Darrell Issa, Tom McClintock and Dana Rohrabacher.
Congressman Issa said, “I whipped no and I haven’t changed my mind. I have had many people trying to call me, but nobody has a convincing argument for my district and for the state of California.”
The latest analysis from the Institute of Taxation and Economy Policy (ITEP) showed that California, New York, New Jersey, and Maryland will see the largest tax increases under the House GOP tax reform bill. These residents from these four states will suffer the most because the legislation will significantly limit the state and local tax (SALT) deductions.
