In the last few years, government agencies have been aggressively closing darknet sites like DarkMarket. In 2020 the Wall Street Market was closed. In 2019, Empire Market, Alphabay, and The Silk Road were all shuttered or had their owners hunted down and prosecuted by increasingly tech-savvy law enforcement.
German authorities say the DarkMarket probe began with their investigation of Cyberbunker, the web-hosting company which was the original host of Wikileaks was taken down in 2019. Cyberbunker was headquartered in an old NATO bunker in Germany.
