NEW YORK (AP) — Actor Jonathan Majors, known for his role in "Creed III," was arrested Saturday and charged with strangulation and battery of a woman, according to police.

New York City police said officers responded to a 911 call for an alleged domestic dispute at a Chelsea neighborhood apartment just after 11:00 a.m. A 30-year-old woman claimed she had been assaulted, and officers took Majors, 33, into custody without incident.

A criminal complaint filed in the incident alleges Jonathan Majors of assault and struck the woman in the face with an open hand, causing substantial pain and a laceration behind her ear. She also claimed Jonathan Majors assault escalated after he grabbed her hand and put his hands on her neck, resulting in swelling, bruising and significant pain to her neck and hand.

Majors' attorney, Priya Chaudhry, denied the allegations, stating that evidence would prove the actor's innocence. "Jonathan Majors is completely innocent ... We are quickly gathering and presenting evidence to the District Attorney with the expectation that all charges will be dropped imminently," Chaudhry said in a Sunday statement review by NewsPulseToday.

Chaudhry cited video footage from the vehicle where the alleged assault took place, witness testimony from the driver and others who both saw and heard the episode, and "most importantly, two written statements from the woman recanting these allegations."

Chaudhry added, "The NYPD is required to make an arrest in these situations, and this is the only reason Mr. Majors was arrested. We expect these charges to be dropped soon."

The woman was taken to a local hospital and treated, according to police.

Jonathan Majors assault: Spokesperson denies

In a statement to ABC News, a spokesperson for Majors denied Jonathan Majors assault and any wrongdoing by the actor, saying, "He has done nothing wrong. We look forward to clearing his name and clearing this up."

Majors faces charges including two misdemeanor counts of third-degree assault, second-degree aggravated harassment, second-degree harassment, and third-degree attempted assault.

The 33-year-old actor made a brief court appearance, where a judge released him on his own recognizance. His next court date is scheduled for May 8.

Majors received an Emmy nomination in 2021 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role in HBO's "Lovecraft Country." He has most recently appeared in "Creed III" and "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania."
