Kash Patel Explodes Over Drinking Claims, Calls Senate Allegations a “Total Farce”

FBI Director Kash Patel erupted during a tense Senate hearing Tuesday, furiously rejecting allegations that excessive drinking and unexplained absences have interfered with his leadership of the nation’s top law enforcement agency.

The explosive confrontation came after Democrats accused Patel of behavior they said could amount to a “gross dereliction” of duty, citing reports that have sparked growing controversy inside Washington and intensified scrutiny surrounding the embattled FBI chief.

“What we are learning about what’s happening at the FBI is anything but normal,” Sen. Chris Van Hollen warned during the hearing. “When your private actions make it impossible for you to perform your public duties, we have a big problem … these reports about your conduct, including reports you’re being so drunk and hungover that your staff had to force entry into your home are extremely alarming, if true, they demonstrate a gross dereliction of your duty and a betrayal of public trust.”

Patel fired back immediately.

“It's a total farce. I don't even know where you get this stuff,” Patel told Van Hollen after being questioned about the allegations first reported by the Atlantic. “I will not be tarnished by baseless allegations.”

The heated exchange quickly escalated into one of the most dramatic moments of the hearing.

When Van Hollen asked whether Patel would submit to testing to determine if he had a drinking problem, the FBI director shot back that he would agree only if the senator took the same test alongside him.

Patel Turns the Attack Back on Democrats

Rather than staying on defense, Patel attempted to flip the controversy onto Van Hollen himself.

The FBI director accused the Maryland senator of being photographed drinking “margaritas in El Salvador on the taxpayer dollar”, referencing images Van Hollen has described as a staged hoax allegedly orchestrated by an aide to El Salvador President Nayib Bukele.

Patel then escalated further, claiming Van Hollen had “ran up a $7,000 bar tab in Washington DC at the Lobby Bar.”

“The only individual in this room that has been drinking on taxpayer dime during the day is you,” Patel shouted.

A spokesperson for Van Hollen later rejected the accusation, saying Patel distorted publicly available campaign finance records.

According to the senator’s office, the $7,128 payment listed in Federal Election Commission filings was for an after-hours holiday reception for more than 50 staff members and was paid using campaign funds, not taxpayer money.

“The $7,128 payment to the Lobby Bar was a catering charge at a local restaurant where the Senator hosted an after-hours holiday reception as a thank you to the 50+ members of our team, paid for by campaign funds – not taxpayer dollars,” the office said.

Inside the Allegations Rocking the FBI

The confrontation stems from allegations published by the Atlantic in mid-April, which claimed Patel’s alcohol use had become “a recurring source of concern across the government.”

The report cited interviews with more than two dozen current and former FBI officials and government sources.

Among the most serious allegations were claims that Patel’s security detail struggled to wake him because he appeared intoxicated and that agents allegedly sought “Swat-level breaching equipment” to enter a room where he was reportedly unresponsive.

Patel has aggressively denied every allegation.

“Print it, all false, I’ll see you in court – bring your checkbook,” Patel told the magazine.

The Atlantic has said it stands by its reporting.

The FBI director has since filed a massive defamation lawsuit against both the magazine and the reporter behind the story in US District Court for the District of Columbia, seeking $250 million in damages.

New Questions Over FBI Leadership and Internal Pressure

Tuesday’s hearing also raised broader concerns about Patel’s management of the FBI during a period of mounting political tension and internal distrust.

Patel denied personally ordering polygraph tests aimed at identifying media leaks inside the bureau. The FBI acknowledged last year that it had begun using polygraph examinations as part of investigations into internal leaks.

Sen. Patty Murray sharply criticized Patel’s leadership while pressing him over reports surrounding his conduct.

“I am deeply concerned about the reports that your leadership has not been serious,” Murray said.

“Your job is to be reachable … if you want to pass out liquor or pop bottles in a locker room, stick to podcasting. Leave law and order to people who really do care about justice and appearances.”

Olympics Celebration Video Added Fuel to Criticism

The controversy surrounding Patel intensified earlier this year after a ProPublica reporter shared video footage showing the FBI director celebrating with the men’s USA hockey team in Milan after their Winter Olympics gold medal victory over Canada.

The video showed Patel chugging from a bottle and spraying beer inside the locker room celebration, sparking backlash online and fueling criticism from opponents who questioned his judgment and professionalism.

Now, with accusations of heavy drinking, internal FBI instability, and a high-stakes defamation lawsuit colliding in public view, Patel faces one of the most politically damaging crises of his tenure.

The battle is no longer confined to media reports or closed-door investigations.

It is unfolding live on Capitol Hill, in front of the country.
