Lawsuits Dismissed: Judge Throws Out Justin Baldoni’s Claims Against Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

lawsuits dismissed

The lawsuits dismissed this week against actress Blake Lively, actor Ryan Reynolds, and The New York Times mark the latest twist in a high-profile feud involving actor-director Justin Baldoni.

Blake Lively expressed “love and gratitude” to those who stood by her and her husband after a federal judge threw out Justin Baldoni’s $400 million lawsuit against them.

A federal judge ruled that Baldoni’s defamation and libel lawsuits lacked legal merit and gave him and his studio, Wayfarer, until June 23 to refile a narrower complaint centered on contract interference.

“It Ends with Us” Becomes a Blockbuster, and a Battleground
The legal fight stems from tensions that arose during and after the filming of It Ends with Us, a 2024 film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel.

Baldoni directed and co-starred in the film alongside Blake Lively, which went on to gross over $350 million worldwide. The film follows the emotional and violent dynamics of a romantic relationship and was co-financed by Wayfarer Studios, a company co-founded by Baldoni.

Despite its box office success, the production was mired in behind-the-scenes conflict. Lively filed a lawsuit in December 2024 in New York federal court, accusing Baldoni and Wayfarer CEO Jamey Heath of "invasive, unwelcome, unprofessional and sexually inappropriate behavior," seeking damages for emotional distress.

Media Coverage prior to Lawsuits Dismissed
Baldoni, Heath, and their publicists retaliated with a sweeping $400 million lawsuit against Lively and Reynolds, citing defamation, invasion of privacy, and interference with business contracts.

Separately, Baldoni sued The New York Times for $250 million, alleging libel over its reporting on the dispute.

The article in question reported on Baldoni’s alleged campaign to damage Lively’s reputation.

In response to the lawsuit’s dismissal, Times spokesman Charlie Stadtlander stated the case was “a meritless attempt to stifle honest reporting” and emphasized that the coverage was “carefully and fairly” handled.

Hollywood Dispute Ends in Courtroom

U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman dismissed the defamation claims, ruling that Baldoni and his team failed to demonstrate that the allegedly defamatory statements were made with knowledge of their falsity—an essential requirement under defamation law.

He also dismissed extortion claims under California law, saying Lively’s alleged attempts to take creative control of the film did not meet legal standards for extortion.

Judge Liman gave Baldoni and Wayfarer Studios until June 23 to file a revised complaint strictly focused on contract interference, if they choose to pursue the matter further.

 Impact in Hollywood
The case has drawn sharp opinions across the entertainment industry, with numerous actors and directors weighing in publicly.

The controversy has also overshadowed the promotional campaigns for recent projects involving both Lively and Baldoni.
