Man Reportedly ‘Cured’ of HIV After Brother’s Rare Genetic Mutation Discovery

A 64-year-old man in Oslo is drawing global attention after entering what researchers describe as long-term HIV remission following a stem cell transplant from his brother — a donor carrying an extraordinarily rare genetic mutation that may block the virus at its source.

The case, now being studied as only the tenth known instance of possible HIV cure, is reigniting scientific debate over whether targeted genetic resistance could one day reshape HIV treatment worldwide.

A MEDICAL MYSTERY YEARS IN THE MAKING
The patient, diagnosed with HIV in 2006 at age 44, had lived for years under standard antiretroviral therapy, which suppresses the virus but does not eliminate it.

HIV is notoriously difficult to eradicate because it can hide in reservoirs of infected cells across the body. Even when treatment suppresses viral levels, the infection can rebound if medication stops.

That persistence is what makes this case so unusual — and potentially groundbreaking.

THE TRANSPLANT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
The turning point came when the patient underwent a stem cell transplant to treat bone marrow cancer. The donor was his brother, who carried a rare genetic trait known as CCR5Δ32/Δ32, a mutation that removes key receptors HIV typically uses to enter human cells.

After the procedure, doctors discontinued antiretroviral medication 24 months later, as the donor’s immune system gradually replaced the patient’s own.

Over time, donor cells spread through the blood, bone marrow, and gut tissues, effectively rebuilding the patient’s immune defenses with HIV-resistant biology.

NO TRACE OF REPLICATING VIRUS DETECTED
Follow-up testing revealed striking results. Tissue samples collected two years post-transplant showed no HIV DNA integrated into host cells.

A large-scale analysis of more than 65 million immune cells found no replication-capable virus and no detectable immune response specific to HIV.

“Replication-competent virus and HIV-specific T cell responses were absent, and HIV antibody responses showed a gradual decline,”

Researchers reported these findings in Nature Microbiology, noting a steady weakening of HIV antibody levels over a four-year period following the transplant.

SCIENTISTS SEE STRONG EVIDENCE OF REMISSION
Further analysis suggested the immune system no longer recognized or responded to HIV, a key indicator of deep remission.

“The absence of HIV-specific T cell responses in our data supports the hypothesis that such an absence correlates with sustained HIV remission,”

researchers concluded, pointing to the complete absence of viral activity markers in the patient’s system.

A RARE DONOR MATCH THAT FEELS LIKE ‘WINNING THE LOTTERY TWICE’
Despite the breakthrough, scientists caution that this outcome is exceptionally rare and unlikely to be widely replicable.

Finding a compatible stem cell donor is already difficult, with siblings only matching about one in four cases. The added requirement of the protective mutation makes the odds even slimmer.

"A sibling has a 25 per cent probability of being a match for a transplant, and the frequency of CCR5Δ32/Δ32 is around 1 per cent”

explained Anders Eivind Myhre of Oslo University, underscoring just how improbable this success story was.

DOUBLE CURING: CANCER AND HIV IN ONE TRANSFORMATION
Researchers say the case stands out not only for HIV remission but also for the successful treatment of the patient’s bone marrow cancer through the same transplant.

"He feels like he has won the lottery twice ... He was cured of his bone marrow disease, which could be fatal, and he's also now cured of HIV, most likely,”

said study co-author Marius Trøseid, describing the outcome as an extraordinary medical convergence.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR HIV RESEARCH
While stem cell transplantation is far too risky and complex to serve as a standard HIV treatment, scientists believe cases like this offer critical insight into how the virus can be eliminated in rare circumstances.

The findings suggest that replacing immune systems with cells resistant to HIV — especially across multiple tissues like blood and gut — may be key to achieving sustained remission.

Researchers emphasize that while a universal cure remains distant, each case like this brings science closer to understanding how HIV can be permanently suppressed or potentially eradicated.
