Astronomers tracking Scientists study interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS say the rare cosmic visitor may have drifted in from a frozen, isolated region of the Milky Way—an ancient relic that predates even our own solar system, moving through space like a time capsule from the galaxy’s deep past.

A Rare Visitor From Another Star System

Researchers report that the comet, known as 3I/ATLAS, is only the third confirmed interstellar object ever detected. It may also be the oldest, with estimates suggesting it could be as much as 11 billion years old—more than twice the age of the Sun.

That staggering age places it in a category of cosmic history few objects ever reach, suggesting it formed long before the solar system itself coalesced from gas and dust.

Tracked by Global Observatories Across Its Journey

A research team led by the University of Michigan used the ALMA Observatory in Chile’s Atacama Desert to analyze the comet last fall.

The object was first discovered in the summer and quickly became the focus of coordinated observations by NASA and the European Space Agency as it raced through the inner solar system. Like a visitor passing through a crowded room without stopping, it swept past Mars in October and made its closest approach to Earth in December before continuing outward.

Now it has moved beyond Jupiter and is leaving the solar system permanently, visible only through advanced telescopes.

Chemical Clues Point to a Frozen Birthplace

In their analysis, scientists detected unusually high levels of deuterium—heavy hydrogen—in the comet’s water. That chemical fingerprint is key to understanding where it formed.

Researchers say the isotope levels suggest the comet originated in an extremely cold environment, far colder than regions where our solar system formed. According to scientist Teresa Paneque-Carreno, the findings point to a birthplace in a distant, frigid region of space that existed before the Sun itself ignited.

A Messenger From the Deep Galaxy

The data suggests 3I/ATLAS is not just a wandering iceball, but a preserved fragment from an early, untouched corner of the galaxy—an object formed in conditions so remote they predate familiar planetary systems.

As it disappears back into interstellar space, scientists say the comet offers a rare glimpse into the raw materials of the universe’s earliest eras, carrying secrets from a time before Earth, before the Sun, and before our cosmic neighborhood even existed.
