A high-profile AI startup promising to transform business training and education is now at the center of a sweeping federal fraud case, with its top executives accused of fabricating hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue to mislead investors during the artificial intelligence boom.

The indictment has sent shockwaves through the tech and finance sectors, raising urgent questions about how far some companies may go to capitalize on soaring investor enthusiasm for AI-driven platforms.

Massive Fraud Allegations Rock AI Startup

Puthugramam “Harish” Chidambaran, the founder and former CEO of iLearning, and CFO Sayyed Farhan Ali “Farhan” Naqvi are accused of running a continuing financial crimes enterprise, conspiracy to commit securities fraud, securities fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud.

Federal prosecutors say the company built its public image on inflated performance claims while privately engaging in widespread deception.

AI Claims at the Center of the Case

According to the U.S. Justice Department, iLearning billed itself as a company that could “generate and infuse insights in the flow-of-work to drive mission critical business outcomes.”

The startup claimed it generated revenue through software license sales and reported more than $420 million in revenue in 2023. It later became a publicly traded company in 2024, amplifying its exposure to investors and lenders.

But investigators now allege the foundation of that success story was fabricated.

The Justice Department says iLearning “fabricated virtually all its customer relationships and revenues.”

Federal Prosecutors Allege Investor Deception During AI Boom

Authorities say the company deliberately exploited market excitement surrounding artificial intelligence to inflate its valuation and attract funding.

“As alleged, the defendants exploited investor excitement over the AI boom and presented a rosy financial outlook to investors and lenders that was built on lies. While the two defendants pitched iLearning as a way to revolutionize training and education through AI, the truly artificial part of the defendants’ story was iLearning’s customers and revenues,” U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. said in a news release. “Our Office is committed to protecting investors and holding accountable corporate executives who undermine the integrity of our financial markets for personal gain.”

Growing Wave of AI-Related Scams Raises Alarm

The case comes as law enforcement agencies warn of a sharp rise in artificial intelligence related fraud schemes.

The FBI’s recent Internet Crime Report documented more than 22,000 complaints involving AI scams last year, with total reported losses exceeding $893 million.

As the AI sector continues to expand rapidly, regulators and investigators are increasingly focused on uncovering financial misconduct hidden behind emerging technology claims.
