The 1947 West Rindge Mystery Declassified Pentagon Files Reveal A Burning Enigma

Antique FBI memo cover sheet from 1947 with handwritten notes, stamps, and torn edges, dated 7-29-47, subject about metal fragments.

The quest to understand unidentified anomalous phenomena, better known as UAP, has long been shrouded in mystery and classified documentation. Last month, the Pentagon released over a hundred newly declassified files that offer a fascinating, if perplexing, window into the past. Among these documents are pages and internal memos detailing a strange and potentially explosive incident that occurred in West Rindge, New Hampshire, during the summer of 1947. This is the story of flaming metal fragments that plummeted from the sky and the top-secret government investigation that struggled to explain their origins.

A Terrifying Afternoon On The Porch

The incident began on July 7, 1947, at approximately 3 p.m. Charles N. Tasker, a retiree enjoying the day on Earl Whitehead’s porch in West Rindge, witnessed something impossible. According to a now declassified FBI report, Tasker noticed small curls of smoke rising from the lawn. Upon closer inspection, he discovered scorched spots, each about one and one half inches in diameter, scattered across the grass.

The phenomenon was not isolated to that single yard. Nearby, along Route 202, several small fires had spontaneously ignited in the dry grass on both sides of the road. These fires formed a massive circle roughly 200 feet in diameter. It appeared that small, burning metallic fragments had rained down, igniting the vegetation upon impact. Tasker acted quickly, calling the local fire department to suppress the fires. Meanwhile, an observer known only as Mr. Appel collected the mysterious metallic remnants and arranged for them to be transported to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for rigorous analysis. The research team was led by Dr. John W. Bunker, the dean of the graduate school, who provided official updates to the Boston FBI field office.

The Scientific Investigation At MIT

Scientists at MIT immediately began the process of deconstructing the nature of these objects. They utilized a spectrograph to analyze light waves and determine the chemical composition of the materials. The findings were definitive yet confusing. The fragments were identified as ordinary iron, but they had been subjected to such intense heat that they had formed scales, essentially turning into cast iron.

The researchers were then tasked with answering a fundamental question. Where did these pieces of iron come from? Because the items were found just 700 feet from a railroad track, the team initially theorized that they might have been remnants from a steam engine or a smoke stack liner. However, subsequent testing quickly ruled out this mundane explanation.

Planes, Missiles, And High Altitude Physics

With the railroad theory invalidated, experts shifted their gaze to the skies. One metallurgist speculated that the fragments could be components from a jet turbo plane. Yet, another scientist voiced skepticism, noting that if these items had fallen from a high altitude, the extreme heat would have dissipated long before they reached the ground, making it unlikely they could have started fires in the grass.

However, if the fragments were originally part of a much larger structure that broke apart at high speed, that object could have potentially retained enough heat to remain volatile upon impact. The scientists attempted to reverse engineer the hypothetical structure from the scattered pieces. They concluded that the debris likely originated from a single, machine-made hollow cylinder that was 8 inches in diameter and 3/16th of an inch thick.

Professor J. Francis Reintjes, an assistant professor of electrical engineering at MIT, noted that the fragments bore a striking resemblance to the internal linings of V 2 missiles he had previously examined in New Mexico. In the late 1940s, the United States was actively testing captured German V 2 technology to explore the upper atmosphere. While the scientists hypothesized that these fragments might have been part of that research, they could not definitively rule out other possibilities.

The Shadow Of Extraterrestrial Theory

The timing of the West Rindge incident could not have been more suspicious. Only weeks earlier, on June 24, 1947, the modern American UFO craze had ignited following reports in the Pacific Northwest. By the time the Boston FBI office was receiving reports from West Rindge, the press was saturated with stories about flying saucers and mysterious aerial discs.

The declassified FBI memos from that time contain handwritten notes explicitly mentioning flying discs. But how does this theory hold up in the modern era? Michael Panicello, the New England regional director of the Mutual UFO Network, suggests that while these documents are a welcome addition to the public record, they may not be the definitive smoking gun researchers often seek. Panicello admits that while he believes in the existence of extraterrestrial life, it is difficult to immediately jump to an alien connection when human made debris cannot be entirely excluded from the investigation.

Analyzing The Material Composition

The theory that the debris came from man made space rockets faces significant hurdles, specifically regarding the material used. James Clemmons, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of New Hampshire, argues that iron is an illogical choice for aerospace construction. Aluminum is favored for its strength to weight ratio, whereas cast iron is considered crude and heavy.

Furthermore, geography poses a major problem for the rocket theory. V 2 launches were conducted at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Officials from that facility have confirmed that even in the event of an erratic flight, debris typically landed within a 100 mile radius of the range. New Hampshire is thousands of miles away from New Mexico, making a debris field from a controlled launch virtually impossible. Additionally, standard V 2 rockets were constructed primarily of steel, a material that the MIT scientists would have easily distinguished from the cast iron found at the scene.

A Meteorite Or An Unsolved Mystery

If the objects were not from a train, a plane, or a missile, could they be of celestial origin? NASA notes that thousands of meteorites fall to Earth, including iron based varieties. However, planetary science experts at MIT clarify that the account does not align with known meteoritic behavior. Meteorites do not arrive at the ground in a hot state capable of igniting fires, and their metallic composition would be easily identifiable as extraterrestrial upon basic analysis.

The ultimate fate of the fragments remains a mystery. A final memo in the released files warned that the specimens would be destroyed if the FBI did not provide specific instructions to the contrary by August 15, 1947. When contacted for comment, the Boston Field Office of the FBI reported that they could not locate any records to confirm whether the samples still exist or if they were destroyed decades ago.

New Hampshire has a long history of unexplained aerial phenomena, including the famous Betty and Barney Hill abduction case in 1961. As for the strange iron fragments that scorched the grass in West Rindge, the passage of time has only deepened the enigma. Without physical evidence left to analyze, the incident near Route 202 remains an unsolved chapter in the history of unidentified aerial phenomena.
