Solano County prosecutors on Monday added a felony child molestation charge to the four existing felonies against 30-year-old Jason Thomas Nichols, sending his bail skyrocketing from $35,000 to $250,000 and transforming what briefly played as a bizarre internet curiosity into one of Northern California's most disturbing cases of the year.

Nichols is scheduled to appear in a Solano County courtroom Thursday for a readiness conference ahead of a full preliminary hearing set for Friday, April 24. The hearings will determine whether prosecutors have enough evidence to hold Nichols for trial on the combined charges — which now include a separate allegation involving a child victim that predates the Fairfield home invasion by just two days.

The Ring Clip That Rattled America

It was a little after 9 o'clock on the morning of April 7 when the first notification pinged the homeowner's phone.
