The numbers don’t just challenge comet theory — they expose a mass-loss process no one is publicly grappling with.

[USA HERALD] - The most recent images of 3I/ATLAS taken from Tenerife, Spain — using the Transient Survey Telescope and the Two-Meter Twin Telescope — do more than confirm that this interstellar object is shedding material. They reveal that it is doing so with a level of precision, restraint, and internal consistency that standard comet models were never designed to explain.

At first glance, the numbers appear unremarkable. Roughly ten million kilograms of dust, released over about a month. A modest dust production rate of roughly three kilograms per second. Gas still dominates the mass loss. Nothing explosive. Nothing catastrophic. But that is exactly where the anomaly lies. Natural cometary mass loss, especially near perihelion, is messy. It spikes, collapses, stutters, and flares. What the Tenerife data show instead is a controlled, sustained release — a slow hemorrhage rather than a violent rupture.

According to calculations outlined by Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, the anti-tail observed in 3I/ATLAS cannot be formed by the ultra-fine dust grains typically seen in cometary comae. Those particles would be blown away almost instantly by sunlight. Nor can the jet be composed of larger grains or pebbles, which gas drag could not accelerate to the observed speeds. The math forces an uncomfortable middle ground: dust grains roughly ten microns in size, clustered in extraordinary numbers.

This is where the mass-loss story becomes far more interesting — and far less discussed.

To account for the observed brightness, the glow around 3I/ATLAS reflects sunlight as if it were a single mirror roughly ten kilometers in radius. That sounds poetic, but physically it means something stark. Because brightness scales with surface area, and surface area scales with the square of size, achieving that glow requires on the order of 10¹⁸ individual dust particles. Each particle is tiny. Collectively, they represent a massive, organized outflow.

Here is the overlooked detail: those particles must be replenished continuously and at nearly the same rate over weeks. If the supply faltered, the anti-tail would shorten. If it surged, the structure would blur or fragment. Instead, across observation windows separated by weeks and millions of kilometers of travel, the geometry remains stable.
