The long-awaited action to protect interracial and same-sex marriage in the United States was finally taken on Tuesday, December 13, 2022 by the Biden Administration. The Respect for Marriage Act was passed by the House of Representatives with a 258-169 vote. Among the voters, 39 Republicans decided to vote in favor of the bill along side the Democrats. The bill was originally created in the aftermath of the controversial Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision by the Supreme Court earlier in the year. Dobbs, essentially overturning key points in the once regarded Roe v. Wade, has been a key issue for many Democrats in the past year. The ceremony took place outside the steps of the White House, and included many performances, including shows by artists Cyndi Lauper and Sam Smith. Among the speakers present, Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer stated, "Thank you to the American people, the vast majority of whom have understood that the inexorable march toward equality is what America is all about. You, the American people, made this bill possible. You made change happen, and because of you we are taking one step closer to fulfilling our work of making a more perfect union."

President and CEO of GLAAD, Sarah Kate Ellis also made a statement: "Today, as it always does, love wins. GLAAD is proud to be among all those at the White House celebration today who helped achieve this milestone and continue to fight for equality, freedom and acceptance for every LGBTQ person."

Vice President Kamala Harris also had something to say, "Because you made your voices heard, marriages are more secure, and Joe Biden is our president. A president who elevated LGBTQI+ leaders to every level of our administration, who fights for the safety, freedom and dignity of all people every single day."

Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, also had something to say on the landmark bill, "It marks a glorious triumph for love, freedom and dignity for all. With the stroke of the president's pen, the fundamental right to marry the person you love is enshrined in the law of the land. This is our latest leap forward in our fight for full equality, which we have waged alongside generations of fearless activists."
