There are many reasons why people indulge in plastic surgery.

Some want to further enhance particular features, whereas others feel more inclined to reduce parts of their body that they deem to be unsightly or otherwise not to their liking.

On the flip side, certain people oppose plastic surgery altogether and recognize it as something they'd never entertain. However, folks who do opt to go under the knife for elective reasons should know what they're getting into and what the risks are.

Without this knowledge, the consequences can be quite literally fatal. One chilling account of this comes out of Turkey, where 31-year-old Melissa Kerr tragically lost her life after seeking a Brazilian butt lift (BBL).

Everything to know about the ill-fated BBL

While Kerr passed away in 2019, new information from the coroner who examined her body is raising eyebrows.

Jaqueline Lake, the coroner in question, confirmed that Kerr wasn't properly informed of the risks associated with BBLs when she went to Medicana Haznedar Hospital for the surgery.

These risks include the following:

• Infections
• Bruisings
• Blood clots
• Stretch marks
• Fat embolism
• Cardiac arrest
• Skin discoloration
• Death

As Kerr underwent the BBL, she arranged to have fat from other parts of her body transferred to her butt. However, amid the injection process, the 31-year-old ultimately passed away from a clot that reached her lungs.

Efforts to revive her once medical officials realized something went wrong sadly didn't pan out. The official cause of Kerr's death now stands as blockage of a blood vessel in her lung, along with pulmonary thromboembolism.

In further remarks, Lake suggested that sharing more information about the grave risks of BBLs can save lives in the long run.

A troubling history

While plastic surgery comes with innate risks, Brazilian butt lifts in particular have the highest rates of mortality. As the medical community looks into why this procedure leads to so many people losing their lives, the available details thus far are quite sobering.

Some officials maintain that when bodily fat is injected into the butt, muscle vessel injuries, the blockage of necessary circulation, and even the internal transfer of fat into the lungs and heart often happen, thus leading to loss of life.
