In a case that shocked the Dallas medical community, Dr. Raynaldo Ortiz was sentenced to 190 years in federal prison for poisoning IV bags. His actions caused patients to suffer cardiac emergencies. This also led to the death of a fellow anesthesiologist, Dr. Melanie Kaspar. 

Ortiz, a former anesthesiologist at Baylor Scott & White Surgicare North Dallas, was convicted in April on all 10 counts related to the tampering scheme.

Dr. Raynaldo Ortiz Convicted with Video Evidence

Ortiz was indicted in September 2022, but his sentencing was delayed three times before being finalized on Wednesday. He waived his right to appear in court, leaving victims and their families to deliver emotional impact statements directly to the judge.

Video evidence played a critical role in the trial, showing Ortiz placing IV bags into a warmer just minutes before nurses retrieved them for patient use.

These bags, prosecutors argued, acted as “poison bombs,” triggering cardiac emergencies when administered.

U.S. Attorney Leigha Simonton condemned Ortiz’s actions, stating, “Dr. Ortiz cloaked himself in the white coat of a healer, but instead of curing pain, he inflicted it.”

Victims and Families Speak Out

The tampered IV bags caused cardiac emergencies in 11 patients, with one fatality. Dr. Kaspar took an IV bag home to hydrate herself, unaware it was contaminated.

 Her husband, John Kaspar, delivered a heart-wrenching victim impact statement, describing his grief. “There’s no closure. My best friend is gone,” he said.

After the sentencing, Kaspar told reporters, “Today marks the end of a beautiful part of my life, and tomorrow I’ll step in a different direction.”

Ortiz’s former neighbor, Roxanne Bogdan, also spoke outside the courtroom. “He’s going away forever, and that’s where he belongs,” she said.

Justice for Dr. Kaspar and Other Victims

Prosecutors argued that Ortiz was retaliating for professional disciplinary actions taken against him in 2018, 2021, and 2022. They alleged he tampered with IV bags out of spite, knowing the harm it would cause.

During the trial, defense witness Dr. Bobbie Jean Sweitzer suggested alternative explanations, including pre-existing patient conditions and potential medication errors. However, the jury rejected these arguments, returning guilty verdicts after about seven hours of deliberation.

Dr. Kaspar’s widower emphasized the emotional toll the case has taken but expressed relief at its conclusion. “I’ll probably never spend another two-or-three-minutes thinking about [Ortiz],” he said.

The sentencing ensures Ortiz will spend the rest of his life behind bars, a resolution many see as justice served for his deliberate betrayal of his oath as a medical professional.
